#0, EPU server move
Posted by Gryphon on May-10-04 at 03:02 PM
LAST EDITED ON 05-27-04 AT 00:54 AM (EDT) the EPU webserver's bandwidth is going away at the end of next month. We're investigating various options and the picture doesn't look particularly bleak right now, but there'll probably be some downtime while we move things around and such. It's all very vague at the moment.I'll update this thread as events unfold. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Let us know if you need it, eh?

While I personally would prefer it if this place remained a free-site (more people able to access it - wider audience, etc) IF push came to shove and it had to become a paysite (BOO! HISS!) I personally would consider paying for it. Mind you it couldn't be very much, as my finances are fiddle-string tight at the moment (thus why this is my first post in ages)Before going down that road, if it has to become a pay site, why not have a donation page, where those so desiring can help keep it a free site. Please though, remember a paysite would restrict readership a great deal. I personally would never have gotten hooked if this place was a paysite. Hmmm... not sure on the legalities of it being a paysite (I'm not a lawyer so I know next to nothing about it anyway but something about the Fanfiction and all that...) but I'd deffinately be willing to make donations for bandwidth if it was asked for. I don't think the place needs to become a pay site. That'd be kind of a gray area anyway given our material.I think a couple well-placed PayPal "Donate" buttons would work a lot better. (Provided of course you don't mind using PayPal.) Works for me, anyway. ;) "Everything here is free but we could sure use some help paying for our bandwidth. LAST EDITED ON 05-12-04 AT 10:23 AM (EDT) This particular problem is more logistical than financial. Try to relax. We don't think we need your money at the moment. Thanks for offering, though. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. #7, server move today

The EPU server will be moved to a new feed later today. There'll probably be a few hours of downtime. We don't know exactly when we're going to get to the move or how long it will take, but barring a major system failure when we go to restart, things should probably be more or less back to normal by this evening.--G. -><- Benjamin D. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the server will not be moved today after all. Possibly tomorrow, possibly Sunday. I'll post if I know beforehand.--G. -><- Benjamin D. Hutchins, Co-Founder, Editor in Chief, Netadmin Eyrie Productions, Unlimited http://www.eyrie-productions.com/

Ahh, the joys of modern technology. And the bureaucratic nonsense one must go through to get anything done with it.

Current tentative schedule has the system going down at 1900ish EDT tomorrow, and coming up at some indeterminate but hopefully not excessive time after that.Exact timing unavailable; reasonably precise advance warning probably also unavailable. --G. EPU: sloppily run but free since 1995

The EPU webserver's been moved to its new home and everything seems to be working. There'll be a day or two of weirdness in some parts of the Internet while the DNS changes propagate, but there's nothing to be done about that. There may be another short bit or two of downtime sometime in the next few weeks as some server improvements are made, now that the pipe situation has been addressed, but hopefully we'll be able to plan those better. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
