#0, login problems under investigation
Posted by Gryphon on Dec-31-22 at 09:10 PM
Not sure if anyone will be able to see this, but just in case: It seems like something is up with cookies at the moment, which is causing weird behavior with login services and notifications for some users. Our hosting guru is looking into it, but, y'know, it's New Year's Eve, so miracles should not be expected. We hope normal service will be resumed soon.

If you're having trouble logging in but you can see this as a guest, try logging in again. Dave thinks we may have fixed it.

(If you're wondering how I was able to post the original message while it was broken, I'm not sure myself. I guess it works differently for admin users. I was able to log in, but had a stuck "you have a new message from" flag up the whole time.)

I've been able to log in, it just flagged everything as new, and had the stuck "new message" flag. Things are marked correctly now, but I had to read all the messages in my inbox to clear the "new message" flag.

Many thanks to Dave!

All right, it looks like service has been resumed. Thanks to Moonsword for digging up the lead that broke the case: there was a stray bit of code buried deep in DCF's guts that set all cookies to expire at the end of 2022. Moonsword found a post on another board about the same thing happening to someone in 2011.

I would not be entirely surprised if presented with evidence that this happened to us too, at the time, and Dave or I changed it to 2022 on the assumption that there was no way we'd still be using this ancient software at that unimaginably distant date, then forgot all about it. :)

I got lucky on a Google search I tried when you mentioned cookie issues.

As for kicking the can down the road, it's even more fun when you go to make notes explaining how to ID and solve this for next time and find your notes from last time you'd forgotten you made. I think I may've done that at least once at the office.
