#0, A Discord server?

Anyone interested in putting together a Discord server for the place? Though I don’t know if there’s enough traffic around here to really make that worthwhile...

I personally feel that a Discord server would lose a lot of the charm that this place holds, and also I don't know if we'd have much use for many of the features of Discord. That being said, I'd join if it happened.

I tend to agree on both counts, but if we're looking for a way to get past the lack of DC Forum features, that's an ideal way to do it.

Quite fair. I guess I kinda just wondered about it because I’m more of a few sentences at a time kind of converser than a ‘forum post-y’ kind, despite how chatty I seem to be of late.

There was, aeons ago, an IRC server (it may still exist for all I know.) I remember there was some Drama, but not exactly what it was that wound up with everyone getting the boot.

Nobody got booted that I can remember. We had a chatbot for a while, which we discontinued because people were using one of its features to spy on the studio channel.

As far as I recall, the "public" channel just died out through natural attrition. I don't actually remember if we turned the server off, as such, when the studio migrated from IRC to Slack a few years ago.

(I did that because I was using Slack for work at the time and thought it offered some pretty significant advantages over IRC for our purposes. Knowing what I know now, I would probably have gone for Discord instead and then we'd most likely already have a public channel again, but I didn't, so here we are.)

I knew about the IRC server, I was in it for a time, long, long, long ago. I was...asked to leave, and rightly so. I was entirely unmedicated and also a lot less cognizant of how...let's use the word "annoying"...I can be.

I'm personally not in favor. I've seen the fate of many communities that migrated to Discord, and subsequently lost everything. When the Web 3.0 bubble pops, self-hosted forums like this one are going to be the few places left intact.

I'd join if one was started, but I'd know it was frighteningly impermanent.

Discord is rapidly heading to the "evil" end of the new/good/evil/swamp progression of modern internet services; and I'm being slowly frogboiled in the process since I'm semi-locked in to discord for my Ars Magica game, and my MMO guilds, and my polycule's server.

(On the other hand me and my nesting-partner use a paid Slack for all our household organisation and that works a lot better than discord in that specific context)
