#0, Upgrade to DCF 6.23

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-02 AT 08:26 PM (EST) You've probably noticed the forums have been upgraded to DCF v6.23. There are a number of major changes from the old version. You will need to reenter your user profile data under the user menu - see the link at the top of the forums. There are some new settings available as well.NOTE: The two things that most users are going to notice is the change in the way you stay logged in across sessions, and the use of the manual 'mark as read' feature. To do either YOU MUST ENABLE THEM IN YOUR PREFERENCES IN THE USER MENU AREA! If you have trouble, post in this thread.

There's also the fact that All posts were marked unread, but none of the threads were...it caused much confusion, until I used the "mark all read" button. I just hope I didn't miss anything :) (edit: also, interestingly enough, "preview" doesn't show my sig, even though it appears when I hit "post" I suppose I could make my sig editable to fix it, but that seems sub-standard somehow...)

A lot. Also, much prettier. Downside: can't see all of the forums at once on the main Forums page. Also, was a bit annoying to find everything marked as unread. Kinda had to guess and hope I didn't miss anything. -- Sean -- Rabid Crack Weasel #42 "All tribal myths are true, for a given value of 'true'." -- Terry Pratchett The Broken Link Follow my creative process

Umm, Zoner? With the new setup, is it possible to set up how you want forums to look on a user-by user basis?Err.. Ok. What I meant was: I normally prefer the "view all" mode for most topics; obviously not everyone does. Does 6.23 support defining which mode is default as part of the user settings, or do I just need to deal?

I was able to Mark All as read, but I'm not sure I understood the preferences info correctly - is there some way to mark individual message threads as read without marking the whole as read?

Nope, it is the same as always - the finest grain is by forum. The short explanation is, marking by thread would be a large load for the server. It stores a timestamp for each forum read, for each user, and checks those to determine what is new. To be able to mark by thread it'd have to store a timestamp for each thread for each user - it should be obvious that would mean a lot more timestamps and a lot more work to check them all each time you read. Doing this with a web based solution is harder than with news - on the web all the work is on the web server, with news the onus is on the client software to store the read/unread info and handle all that.

>so, when do we start coding on our Web board to beat all web boards? Soon, I hope. I've been thinking about it more lately. Mainly it is getting my self-confidence back to tackle it. I need to write down some of the things in my head and email you and Josh about them.

>If you have trouble, post in this thread. No real trouble here, but I tried to send myself an icq page yesterday and it failed. Likely it was a problem with their website, or my client (ickle--which may not be able to recieve the web based pages). Random praise of the day: I REALLY like the new view all link thats inside an expanded thread. Its a whole lot of useful to me. ------------------------------------- Chris can't handle upgrades

After a couple false starts, I think I like it. Particularly the feature that lets me know who last posted to a forum.t. Trigger Argee trigger_argee@hotmail.com Manon, Maccadon, Orado, etc. Denton, never leave home without it. "Pretty ambitious for a tree, isn't it?"

>If you have trouble, post in this thread. I had to make a new account, as my old login had too many letters. Limit of 18, apparently. Irritiating thing is that it doesn't tell you until _after_ you've written a reply to someone, when you hit "post". -NightmareButterfly

Irritiating thing is that it doesn't tell you >until _after_ you've written a reply to someone, when you hit "post". WTF? I thought he *fixed* that. *mutter* Yeah, the new DCF lets you limit the lenght of the login names people can create. But this problem with legacy accounts came up when 6.2 was first released, and I, and others, said it should only limit them when *created*, not when *used*, which would completely avoid this problem. David said that was a good idea, and I never heard about it again, so I thought it was fixed in subsequent releases... Ok, something else to do.
