Nicely done, Gryph. I think you undersell yourself a bit -- this certainly isn't anywhere close to ... what did you call it? Your "crap period". If it were at one time cruder, well, it's certainly gone under a more sophisticated editorial knife since then, and it shows. It kept me reading most of the evening, instead of balancing my checkbook and doing the bills, after all... <grin>

I, too, am an old, old Marvel fan, from around 1982-3 to maybe 1990, and the affectionate (and not-so-affectionate) tributes to that era really rung some bells for me. It's a pity you couldn't shoehorn some of my other personal favorites in there, but I understand the constraints that the story imposed. (On that topic, since folks are engaging in reminiscences elsewhere in the thread, does anyone else remember the Wolverine-Katie Power teamup?) I'm also a Dr. Who fan (almost a quarter century now), and that whole element of the story was a pleasure to see. I really wish we could get to see some of those adventures merely hinted at in the narration... that would be a lot of fun. Oh, well...

I can't wait to see if the ending is "in continuity" for UF proper; I hope it is, simply because of the realm of possibilities that it opens. I won't go into "what ifs" here, because so many others have already, but I'm really hoping to see these folks again.
