#0, Anime Detective: Curtain Call

Folks, one year for Nanowrimo, I wrote what I consider to be the last Anime Detective story. Considering that I wrote the first story back in, oh, 1993, I think I've progressed a bit in my style. So, is anybody interested in reading it? Fair warning--there are moments with Really Serious Stuff and I haven't had a beta reader go through it. And there may be some timey-wimey stuff in there, along with Big Commentary. So, I repeat: Does anyone want to read this and find out how Andrew Mays et al. end up? Or, does anyone want to read this and make suggestions. I can convert the file to a PDF and link to Google Drive. Anyway, I know this probably won't garner much interest, but...I do have An Ending for Andrew Mays. --Doc

Heh, I don't remember which year it was, but I remember Doc doing this. I also remember making him do the Big Anime Sweatdrop thing by asking if he was taking inspiration from Curtain, Agatha Christie's last Hercule Poirot novel. :)--G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-24 AT 07:48 PM (EST) OK, folks...here are two of the last stories for Detective Andrew Mays.First of all, there's "Birthday Blues," where Andrew survives his 30th birthday and gets a jarring perspective on what Might Have Been: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gcESiyktmNvK2qfykGG_24VILcYi4IoA/view?usp=drive_link And here's the final story, "Curtain Call." The nightmare that Andrew encountered on his 30th birthday may be coming true, thanks to an "old friend" of his: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RUna_atdsi0MXt3Ws94aeXF-dE0Phowf/view?usp=drive_link There is a story that predates these two, "Fragrance Fiasco," but the details are pretty much summarized in these two stories.
These are PDF files and, as I mentioned before, the stories are raw and not proofread. So, if anyone finds any wonkiness, let me know. Oh, and they may both be 50k words, since they were Nanowrimo projects. So, you've been kind of warned. Anyway, happy reading! --Doc (Access should now be for whoever has the links. Sorry about that, folks.) >Folks, one year for Nanowrimo, I wrote what I consider to be the last >Anime Detective story. >Google is restricting access. Same here. Google tends to default to links that only work for people who have been specified as given access - there's a drop down that changes that to links that work for anyone, but that has to be chosen every time.

Just finished Birthday Blues. That was a rough time for Andy. And some musing on police you often don't see people commit to writing properly. Well done.Matrix Dragon, J. Random Nutter

That was a good couple of stories, a lot of fun.I did note one incomplete paragraph on page 249 of the final story (and you uploaded a lot of notes at the start of one). The only criticism I'd make is that bringing up the 'dynamic detective duo' thing maybe came up a little too often - once it was established, repeating it for the audience felt like it came up once or twice when it didn't need to be. But it was a good, earned (and urded) ending for Andrew. Thanks for sharing.

>That was a good couple of stories, a lot of fun. Cool. Glad you liked it. >I did note one incomplete paragraph on page 249 of the final story >(and you uploaded a lot of notes at the start of one). Ugh. Okay, that's what happens when I do things when I'm tired. >The only criticism I'd make is that bringing up the 'dynamic detective >duo' thing maybe came up a little too often - once it was established, >repeating it for the audience felt like it came up once or twice when >it didn't need to be. I've eliminated all but one mention of that phrase. It's cringeworthy enough even once, so I get your point. >But it was a good, earned (and urded) ending for Andrew. Thanks for >sharing. No problem. The new version has been uploaded with corrections. Thanks for taking the time to read it! --Doc

This was what Detective Mays needed. He might never get away from his overusing Mylanta, but somehow, I think it'll be better. It's been quite the ride from there to here, and I'm glad I got to see it all play out. Peter Eng -- I'm not very good at literary review. "Annoying proofreader" is more my speed.
