Some kind soul has been taking various anime laserdiscs and making ludicrously high resolution scans of the artwork and sharing them on archive.org. The scans of the Dirty Pair TV laserdisc box set (aka "The Dirty Pair's Big Financial Settlement") struck me as being of particular interest to folks here.

The archivist responsible has scanned a slew of other classic anime laserdiscs, plus other odds and end such as the 1990 Dirty Pair Calendar. That includes a variety of other Dirty Pair laserdisc releases, with plenty of fun images to flip through. All the pleasure of browsing through an amazing collection of laserdisc imagery, none of the hassle of importing the discs and finding a place to put them. Enjoy!

Man, I miss laserdiscs. I mean, they were unwieldy as fuck and HD hadn't been invented yet, so they weren't really better enough than VHS to be worth it, but... they had an aesthetic.

That was largely down to how well used the VHS's were - tapes, and players - as well as your TV and it's hookups. As well as the transfer to the laserdisc. Also, the fact they actually had memory meant pausing didn't sit in mid-interlace. Also, you could select letterboxed or cropped on the fly, I think? Anyway, there's ways too rip them, now. Ways that are unwieldy as hell but you can do it. Tech Tangents has a couple of videos about the 'Domesday Duplicator' and the ups and downs of trying to rip an analog format like this for preservation purposes. Which is good, because there's a distressing amount of anime that's just, never gotten, and never going to get a digital release.

Also, as point of fact, there was a high definition of sorts on laserdisc in 1993, as shown by TechMoan.

In a similar vein, I was looking up some music stuff for Live Aid, and found out that one of the acts that played from remote during the act changes on the main stage came in from Japan. Her name was Meiko Nakahara, and she performed the biggest hit of her career, a song called “Russian Roulette”.
