...and to think, this is the one that got me sucked into the Usual Suspects.

about three months ago.

if anyone thinks the release queue is maybe one, two stories tops in reserve, please think again. ;)

Oh, sure, give it away.

It's true, though. Interlude at Bancroft Tower No. 1 was the first piece of the Symphony completed, a week or two before Wounded Rose. It exploded out of my head in the space of a single evening/early morning, and in so doing changed what had originally been intended to be a harmless little joke - Corwin's initial reaction to Utena - into a major character axis that will affect the entire Symphony.

That was the moment when I knew this was going to be one of those projects where the characters show me the way, as opposed to the other way round. That was when I knew Corwin was for real (and that Utena had decided to stay for a while :). A wonderful feeling...

This was an astonishingly well written piece of humanity - if there was any question of the underlying reality of the characters (well, as far as fictional characters go :), it's gone now.
(I know that doesn't sound quite right, but it's the best I can do and I know what I mean :)

That being said - Gryphon, you're an SOB. I knew what had to be coming, I knew that somehow Kala had died, but when I read the paragraph of Corwin's outburst it litterally stunned me. I know that things just go where they have to, and that this little bit did a lot for the character development, but still...

Of course, the fact that you can do that is why I consider you to now be one of, if not the, best writers I've ever read.

Looking forward to the next installment...

P.S. You should keep an eye out for the Psi-Corps - I'm beginning to think you're a boradcast cyber-empath (or maybe I just need to dampen my receptors :)

Hmm, that explains a few comments from a while ago, although it was a shock reading it. I've gotten used to Corwin almost acting like an adult. Then something like this happens, throwing the poor guy off balance, making him act more like the kid he is.

I really enjoyed how Utena spoke of the Rose Bride, actually letting me in on some of her past. And Corwin asking Utena out was brilliant!

Gryph,
This piece was perfect. I love the way you handled the Corwin/Utena
relationship:) I have not seen any of the Utena series, so I do not
know her character but I love the angle you have written her. Her
dedication to Anthy, even in the strange UF Universe and following her
heart is great. I hope she does not have any sexual or romantic
relationships per se, because for me it will make the reunion and life
afterward that much more special. Keep of the good work. SOS is some
of the best story and character work so far. I have really enjoyed
the whole series.

If you're one of the Usual Suspects, does that mean Gryphon is Keyser Soze?

If the above is a reference to it, then I should think you'd have been able to work that out from context...

Kaiser Soze (or however it was spelled) was the master-super-criminal genius behind the caper in the movie... of course, he was also a truely heartless and ruthless bastidge, but you can't have everything...
