Anybody played these? If so, any good? The setting seems interesting. Sort of The Elder Scrolls in the Balkans.

I have and they are really good. The story is really enthralling. While you can't 'Customize' your character like is a lot of games. Playing Geralt of Rivia is a blast.
I bought the original game (Europe Edition) when it first came out.
The cinematics were awesome.

Each game got better.
This series is one of the few that I still play. I go back and start the series over and even now, the Original still looks DAMN Good!

The original books are not required because the Video Game Series gives you pretty much everything you need to understand the world and what is going on. This is good because the books were readily available in english until relatively recently.

The books add some very nice history and are referenced by the games, but even without the book knowledge, they still make sense in the game.

I mean, I just completed the books a week or so ago, but I had beaten the 3rd game twice months ago and a completed the DLC.

CD Project RED, made a great series that really give your choices and decision weight and consequences. And sometimes, you don't even realize the ramifications of your decision until much later...

Thanks!

The first game is linear in the same way KotOR is. Same base game engine.

The second still follows the linear narrative although it's a new engine developed in house.

The third is a TES-style open world game.

They're all quite good if you like the Slavic (specifically Polish) take on medieval fantasy. Think Brothers Grimm before they were forced to sanitize their folklore collections.

I picked up the series relatively recently, as it went on -massive- sale on Steam and I'd heard good things.

The first game didn't want to cooperate on my machine much, but that's likely a case-by-case issues that I just didn't feel like taking the time to sort out. I've played a lot of the 3rd game (though haven't finished it yet...), and it is fantastic. Story is really interesting, characters are engaging, and gameplay is reasonably easy to pick up but with what I feel is a good amount of depth.

The first game really needs the fan patches in order to run reasonably stably on contemporary kit. It's kinda like Fallout 3, which is to say that it's not nearly as crashy as STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl :).

This is precisely what it is. You nailed it in one.

With the caveat that when you say "in the Balkans" it isn't just that thematically; it has all the batshit insane folklore and mythology that comes from the pure, uncut Slavic tradition of that sort of thing. We're talking dark forests where darker things lurk. We're talking bogs and mists and demons. We're talking serious dudes with serious beards drinking serious drinks before going out into a winter storm to do some serious shit that they'll never, ever talk about again but that they'll see every time they close their eyes until they die.

Also card games!

I haven't played these, but $spouse has played the first one and half of the second. She reports that #1 is very linear, #2 less so but still not nearly as open-world as Oblivion or Skyrim. So if that's what you're after you might consider skipping straight to the third.
