Just for the sake of comparison, how well were the Arcadia-class ships mentioned armed?

The one I bought spent a while on a windowsill, I would guess, and I didn't have the time (or the cash) to source another one, so I had to No-Prize™ it a little. :)

You could retrobrite it, if you dared take it apart. And I'm sure someone on then intertubes knows how to do that.

That aside, 10/10 post. Right up there with 'Urbie LAM' and 'Googly Eyes in Overwatch' for the best April Fools jokes.

Glad this got out there! I was considering doing a writeup of my own on a similar subject, perhaps some piece of goofy Transbelvian ironmongery that managed to be both chronically over- and under-engineered at the same time. Yours would have wound up being better though, not least because of the addition of pictures; I haven't been able to get up to my dad's barn recently to strip down any of the gun games.

But yeah, it's not so obtuse an idea that I can seriously take credit for putting it in your head, but we did discuss it via PM many moons ago. It certainly turned out great, and I hope it becomes a running gag. =]

FiMFiction.net: we might accept blatant porn involving the cast of My Little Pony but as God is my witness we have standards.

also i'm p sure yours would be better purely because i'm not hugely knowledgeable about gunsmithing, though were an article discussing some Glorious Transbelvian Industrial Workmanship that might not entirely matter. =]

Ha, now that you mention it, the basis of the joke has been rattling around in my head this whole time, but I didn't consciously remember where it came from; I'm sure now that it totally sprang from your original idea.

It may well end up being a recurring thing; I had a different plan originally, but I wasn't able to pull the props for it together in time for this year. And at some future point, if and when freedom of movement is restored to the settled world, you may yet get to make those pictures. :)

I strongly suspect Burt Gummer either a) has one of these in his bunker, or b) someone sold him the original toy and convinced him it was a Type II, and he's going to be very disappointed when he goes to use it.

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

"...a convenient panel on the left side."

Well, convenient for right-handed users. There are claims that TroCon Morgan created a Type II WMR-L and gave it to Gryphon for a present (Christmas or his birthday, depending on who's telling the story), but there's nothing in the historical record to back up these claims.

It's fine for left-handed use as well—you just use your trigger hand instead of your support hand to operate the controls. You're not working them while shooting anyway. If anything, it's probably a little easier to do it left-handed, because you don't have to let go with the hand that's supporting most of the rifle's weight, as you do when, e.g., shooting a right-handed bolt-action rifle left-handed.

Of course, the WMR's weight is pretty negligible for a military shoulder arm, I should have mentioned that, but still.

>The galaxy's smallest Class Omega energy weapon.

True story: When I first read UF (i.e. when it was published), I had a very strong mental image of this weapon.

It wasn't until years later that I realized I'd confused it in my head with the Nintendo Super Scope,

Some versions of the story attribute her success to the same probably-apocryphal "virtual realization" technology that supposedly powered Robert "ReRob" Mandeville's prototype Cyclones. Others say she built it in the school's electrical engineering lab using equipment originally intended for high-energy physics experiments. Still another version has her building the device in a cave (precisely where there was a cave in pre-Contact Worcester is not elaborated upon) with a box of scraps.

All we know is, she's called the Stig.

This is beautifully done! On my monitor that color looks... amusingly close to FDE, actually. I can hear some bemused trooper wondering what the point of ordering it in FDE was when it has a *bright red* stripe down the side, and then the sergeant reminds them that if they're close enough to the enemy for them to see the red stripe, they're inside minimum safe firing distance anyway.
