#0, Question about "Secrets" (Older UF)
Posted by Offsides on Sep-15-01 at 11:11 AM
I just reread "Split Infinitive" and "Secrets" (courtesy of TNT showing ST III :), and remembered something that's bothered me for a while...

It seems like there's some interesting back-story to Commisioner Julian Amberson, as hinted to by Kei's thoughts on the matter (among other things), but he's never brought up again. Was/Is there any plans to explore that further? Or do you just have the backstory to post here if there is one?

One of the best and worst things about UF in general is all the little pieces that can go off to the side on tangents...

No. I'm actually quite embarrassed by how bad Secrets is, nowadays; revisiting any of its elements would give me that "thinking about something really dumb I did in high school" sort of feeling, so I won't be doing it.

I don't think of it as bad, just very early (IIRC, it was one of the first 3 or 4 non-core UF interludes I saw). I do appreciate the response - I'll scratch it off my "Huh, I wonder whatever hapened to..." list :)

Don't be embarassed by your early works - without them, they current stuff would never have come out. Everybody has to start somewhere, and nobody starts at the top...

Yeah, I know...

... but Secrets is really lame. :)

I think the main thing that bothers me about it is that it covers such an important event. If it were just a badly-plotted Exile story (like, oh, Ronin), I could get over it, but it's a badly-plotted Exile story that covers an event (the clearing of Gryphon's name) that really should have been done in a slightly-better-than-half-assed fashion. As it is, there're a few things I still like about it, but they're mainly minor asides. The "plot" is utter nonsense and most of the characterization makes me wince and groan as if poked with a sharp stick.

Ah, well. At least I can use it as the exemplar of my Crap Period. :)

Nothing is useless - it can always serve as a bad example :)
