You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
Ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine Decision Street
Ninety-nine ministers meet
To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call out the troops now in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

*Ninety-nine knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Every one's a super-hero
Every one's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scramble in the summer sky
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

Neun-und-neunzig Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer haette das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen neun-und-neunzig Luftballons

Ninety-nine dreams I have had
And every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In the dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenir
Just to prove the world was here
Here it is, a red balloon
I think of you and let it go
- Goldfinger "99 Red Balloons" Stomping Ground

I think I'll have to have the Art of Noise cover this version sometime. I know it's a cover, and I'm quite fond of the original too, but for some reason I think Goldfinger's version is more Kate's style. It lacks a keyboard part, which makes that notion kind of counterintuitive, but I think for a song like this she'd want to have herself free to get out from behind the stack and do the usual "punk singer with microphone stand" things. It's a change of pace. Besides, I like the mixed-language lyrics. :)

* This verse isn't present in the version of "99 Red Balloons" that's on Stomping Ground - but I know Goldfinger recorded it, because it is in the excerpt from their version of the song that's in Gran Turismo 3. If anybody has any information about where I might find a complete version of the song that has that verse in it, please let me know; I'm quite curious as to why it's missing from the album version in the first place.

Uh... I've never heard an *English* version of the song that didn't have that verse in it. Might it have not been in the German version?

It's in Nena's English version, but not Goldfinger's - at least, not the one that's on the Goldfinger album Stomping Ground. But, as I say, I know Goldfinger did record it, because it's in Gran Turismo 3 that way.

Yeah. A more thorough check of GT3 indicates that they put in the Captain Kirk verse instead of the "Streichholz und Benzinkanister" verse, so that the GT3 version is all in English. I guess maybe they were worried about people getting distracted by the language change in the BGM and driving off the road. :)

Truss is considering putting together an edit featuring both verses, which would be the way Kaitlyn would perform it. :)

YES! (Although that misrepresents how I would have verbally stated my agreement with this song, it does convey the level of association this song has with SOS and UF, imo.) I think that song captures both the joyful hope and somber nostalgia of SOS. It represents going out exploring, but at the same time brings to mind the closeness that the Art Of Noise/Duelist Society have. I also cannot help but parallel the anti-Nuclear message and the anti-PsiCorps plot developing... But, mebbe that's just moi.

For the past three days, I have been haunted by thoughts and dreams of Nene singing "99 Red Balloons"...

...while interspersing lyrics from "Iron Man".

"Has he heavy boots of lead/Has he thoughts within his head?"

AAAAAUGH!

BTW, per the above, that was actually "Nena" (the original artist).

I didn't edit the above because it was a proper Freudian typo, and because the idea of Nene singing this is a completely seperate, though higly amusing, image.

What I couldn't see is her putting in Iron Maiden lyrics, because that would imply her and Priss being civil together.

Excuse me as I scamper off to the HL fora...

Black Sabbath, on the other hand is a different matter.
I once saw the Cardigans preform "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" at the Hatch Shell.
Bizarre.

*nodnod* Iloveit! ^_^

Always seemed more like banter, to me. *shrug* Whatever.

Personally, I always picture her singing Scratching Post's I'm Your Demon.

Have you heard the Duran Duran tribute album that came out a couple years back? Goldfinger does a cover "Rio" that's pretty decent, the Reel Big Fish cover of "Hungry Like the Wolf" is good too.

Speaking of Duran Duran, was Kate's stuffed tiger named Seven to reference an album by those guys? (Seven And The Ragged Tiger, JSYK).

Or is it just me?

From Hogtown Rhapsody:

"I've been wondering, Kaitlyn," mused Miki as Kate finally
tore herself away from the tigers and moved on toward the giraffe
habitat.
"Mm?" asked Kate.
"Why is your stuffed tiger called 'Seven'?"
"D-Dad's l-l-little j-joke," Kate replied with a fond smile.
"H-he'd never t-t-tried to m-make a s-stuffed t-toy b-before I was
b-b-born. He c-claims it t-took him s-seven tries to g-get something
th-that w-wasn't so wr-wrong-l-looking it s-scared me."
Miki chuckled. "Do you think it's true?"
"Wh-who kn-knows?" Kate replied, patting the head of the
ragged tiger tucked under her arm. "It's a f-f-family legend. You
d-don't q-question that k-k-kind of th-thing too c-closely."
That got a thoughtful nod. "I see your point," he said.

Although I do think the Duran Duran thing is neat. :)

The seventh-attempt story is the in-continuity explanation.

Here in the real world, hell yes it's a Duran Duran reference. :)
