as a slightly nitpicky aside, Gryphon...you have "Giant Robo" in one location where (I suspect) you meant "Tiny Robo"

My commentaries, to be written as I read the second time through:

*snicker*

Presents! PRESENTS! --*>_PRESENTS!!!!!!_<*--

Azlynn IS idic.

I don't think I've mentioned it, but I just love the way tiny little details keep showing up and turning over an aspect of this universe that I've never looked at before.

Umm... Doesn't Ed say that D&D is STABLE later on? If so, what's up with his message to Janice?

Hunter? WTF?

I'm reminded of a scene... two, actually, tho I only saw the later one... Marcus says to Ivonova, >You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.<

Tribble chow. Now he only needs to get her a tribble...

*snerk* Anecdote my Physics teacher once told (He, by the way, is the absolute battyest man it has ever been my great good fortune to meet.) Apparently, one of his college professors was to be the target of a joke involving a fan and a strobe light. The teacher got back at them by writing the days notes in a single line all the way across the blackboard... and the wall next to it. And the side wall. And the back wall. And the OTHER side wall.

"Hello!" <shatter completely and utterly>

I thinks I likes Wakaba, yes I does.

Bodyguard? *snicker* Poor Utena.

Y'know, first time I read that I thought she'd glomped him. Either way, just goes to show what a breathtaking lady she is.

Ya want fries with that?

That's... ow. <shatter>

Photo album! Good plan! Good plan!

Awwww...

LEAAFFS! Actually, the closest I've ever come to being interested in hockey was the time they made us play floor hockey in physed. I actually made a half decent goalie.

Mac! Buzz! G'kron! BATHERSON'S COLLEGE!!!

"No."

I think I'll just skip most of the concert, at least as far as commentary goes.

I've got this sudden picture of Miki standing in front of a telephone booth with little question marks on his lapels...

Damn I wish this were a real movie. I'd really love to get that cut of 99 Luftballons. I love that song.

Soundproofing is good.

Quote of my original reaction: The 1HW is CORWIN'S?!?!?!

Is, like, the entire Hutchins clan retro? If so, cool.

Okay, I gotta scram. I'll pick up at the first appearence of the Jackboot Brigade's minion.

Just FYI, a lot of this is really context-challenged.

Durandal is stable. He sent that message to Janice during the stage at which Ed and Ein were still filtering all his traffic, though, so he had to get creative with the way it was sent.

>Hunter? WTF?

It's a reference to Phantasy Star Online. Ask Ard, I just work here.

The Hunters of Ragol are a staple part of the Dreamcast RPG Phantasy Star Online. The basic concept involves a new colony, name of Ragol, that's having some mysterious problems with the local wildlife, missing colonists, all hell breaking loose, etc. In response to this problem, the Hunter's Guild arises (at least in Undocumented Features; it's entirely possibly that the Hunter's Guild exists prior to landfall in PSO itself) to handle the wildlife, round up the missing, and figure out exactly what the hell is going on down there.

For more info on the game-- it's worthy, I found it a lot of fun and others of the Usual Suspects agree-- you can look here:

PSO v.1

Basically, when I was looking for a decent world concept for UFme that wasn't taken, Ragol came up as a Likely Candidate, because:

a) no one else was using it;

b) I have played the game, read the sites, know the backstory, and I could work up something feasible from there and feed it to Gryph.

And no, he's not kidding when he says he knows nothing about it; Rob Shannon and I are doing most of the information legwork for him.

Wow, and I thought I was one of the few people here who played it. Nice choice. The only appearance or usage of PSO in other literature I have seen so far is Fred Perry's Gold Digger. It would seem Brianna is fond of it. That and Pebochuu...*sigh*

Of course, I've liked most of the PS universe story in general. I'm actually a little surprised that Phantasy Star stuff hasn't crept into the Multiverse here yet.

Thanks. I'm still on the lookout for a copy of the Book of Hunters artbook, to give Gryphon some more background, when I've got the cash for it. Right now, my main source of info is the game, a few websites, and the Strategy Guide.

I am *very* pleased to hear that the RAmarl (female ranger-- a gunslinger/ sniper type, for those unfamiliar with the game) class will be making an appearance in the GameCube version. :)

Usually, if something hasn't shown up, it's because either there's not an immediately-apparent place for it, or because no one's really thought of it yet. Rob and I have been tossing around possible hooks for PSO concepts in the Undocuverse, but nothing's really come up yet that sticks. Possibly because, really, UFme was kind of a one-shot giggle who decided she wanted More Development Than That. :)

Now here's a question: Is Janice a Hunter, a Ranger, a Force, or something completely different?
I'd plave my bets on Ranger, but Hunter might be amusing, just to have somebody running around

Among her other hobbies, Janice shoots tactical pistol. You figure it out. :)

Though Martin Rose initially guessed that she was a Newman Force... personally, I have yet to get a good grasp on how the technique system would apply to the Undocuverse's previously-established rules for handling magic/ psionics/ etc.

("I think I'm inclined to call that a gizmo, not a creature, looking at it." --Gryphon, confronted with a picture of a Mag.)

Ard
...oddly enough, I don't shoot IRL. I know a bit about guns, but I don't like handling them. Personal quirk.

Can't be a Ranger then, Rangers never use pistols. Probably a Force then.

Oh, then you'll love it. It bears a lot of resemblence to Everquest, presuming that's the kind of mindless slugfest you like. No flames, of course: it's a different game than Everquest entirely, but generally, it appeals to the same target audience.

Heh. I despise EQ. This could be because I've seen several marriages go wildly awry over it (and, yes, other issues that were grossly exacerbated by the lovely communication-avoider that is EQ). Or, it could be because I'm merely too antisocial to play MMORPGs (you want me to team up with people I don't know who talk in all caps? are you nuts?), and hence play PSO in offline mode pretty exclusively.

The one time I wandered into a PSO lobby, I fled within two minutes. The cartoon speech bubble thing just _really_ bothers me... although it can be used for some unintentionally kawaii effects on big, burly Rangers. :)

My idea of fun, of course, is Diablo 2, but I just DON'T think I could've gotten the D2 game world past Gryphon as a viable homeworld for UFme. :)

And yes, some actual roleplaying would have greatly helped PSO-- but for what it is, a PC-style MMORPG on a console, it works pretty darn well.

OTOH, on the "purist" side of the equation, I'm still livid that Old Man Nintendo decreed that Metroid Prime needs to be a first-person shooter. I *liked* Metroid; aside from the occasional bout of Marathon or Half-Life, I hate FPS.

Before you complain too loudly about FPS games, I *strongly* recomend you go out and play System Shock 2. Even the Demo will give you a fairly good idea of what an FPS is capable of outside of shooting. (Heck, you don't even encounter an *enemy* until about halfway through the demo.)

It's not the perspective, but the execution, that's important.

>My commentaries, to be written as I read the second time through:

>Tribble chow. Now he only needs to get her a tribble...

Background info here:

Tribbles (specifically, the Jones' Tribble, named after its credited discoverer) are a restricted dangerous animal under Federation law. It requires a special license to own a tribble as a pet, and part of the requirements for such a license is that the owner shall own, at any given time, no less than five pounds of a special formulated animal feed which suppresses the Tribble reproductive system. Given the incredibly robust nature of said reproductive system, the feed is -very very- expensive, and having 100 pounds of the stuff show up on your credit card bill one day is a rich person's equivalent of, "What do you MEAN six ten-minute calls to Paraguay??"

In the 25th century pet industry, the joke is, 'Few things are as cheap as a tribble, and few things are as expensive as tribble chow.'

Your pre-readers have a very good handle on BGC in-jokes ^_^

Is Sylia still moonlighting in a merry widow?

<chuckle> Well, so do I -- it was intended as a tip o' the hat to Redneck and his infamous collaboration -- but I hadn't dared originally go as far as to include the trademark "sweetling". However, half a dozen of my prereaders demanded it. And who am I to buck the collective opinion of those whom I consult for their opinions, right? <grin>

Not in my fic, she ain't. On-camera, at least...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-01 AT 11:15 AM (EST)

Ok I've just confirmed that the full version of the song is on the Advance Music Relase of Goldfingers Stomping Grounds cd. If you can get a hold of that cd you can have the full version of the song.

Actually I know where that song is and off the Grand Turismo 3 Soundtrack. Since I work at a Radio Station as a DJ the station has an copy of the goldfinger album as an advance release type thing. If I remember correctly It has all the verses on it. I'll check again during my show to make sure, but I'm really sure its off the advance release. If I'm right then the hard part would be getting a copy of the advance release from somewhere.

Oh, I've already got the mp3 of the Goldfinger cut... I just wanna hear KAIT, or a reasonable approximation thereof, singing it.

Blessed be.

Eee. Corwin did something Marcus-like? I'm going to have to kill him off now.

Then again, DJ did a Marcus impression one time in NXE, and...

... wait.

Uh-oh.

Sorry, Cor, we'll all miss you...

Heh. That anecdote, as related, actually happened to Professor Farr (a real WPI math professor) during a session of the calc class I had with him my year at WPI.

the telling in RoS doesn't quite have the same impact as hearing
the whole anecdote firsthand. I think it gets cut off before ProfFarr's
reaction at realizing what he's done.

True. Upon reaching about 15/16 of the way around the room, he paused, his explanation of the operation he was demonstrating trailing off, and said, "... which brings me to this, which is... completely... wrong. I must have made a mistake someplace around... " (He gestured vaguely at the first board.) "... You guys might as well go, it's going to take me an hour to figure out what I did wrong."

Makes me wonder how many other slices of WPI life are showing up in SotS ^_^.

I started reading this at 9am. I shudder to think what it sounded like for the next hour and a half. A recording would probably indicate I was laughing almost constantly, the gaps being me reciting the 'good lines' or vocally slandering characters I don't like.

SoS just keeps getting better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better...

Just one thing though. Three days before my final exams. Bastards. How can I study with this here?

The management accepts no responsibility for any difficulties resulting from ill-timed use of the product. Besides, who the fuck has final exams in early November?

(How did this become the active thread? It's been dormant for over a month... )

Australia, that's who. Our school year starts in Janurary, finishes in November.

Everyone saw the screaming and figured it was a suitable starting point.

<blink>

Righto, that's one states school year, (sounds like one of the HSC* users.)
however, February to the first week of December is the typical 7-10 Victorian secondary school year, Year 11 early-mid November before unit 2 VCE** exams, Year 12 October/November before unit 4 VCE exams.

*Higher Schooling certificate. (I think that's right.)
**Victorian Certificate of Education.

Well, that's what it was when I went through it a few years back.

Phantasy Star? Hunter or Ranger or whatever it is, all I'm thinking is: Great, more references that I don't understand. I need to get out more.

I'm in Victoria Rod, and they revised the whole thing two years ago. CAT's are gone, thanks to people cheating at home, and now it's all outcomes done in class, and the majority of the ENTER score comes from the Exams. We started at the very end of January, and finished with muck-up day last Friday.

YES!!!!!!! FINALLY!!! NEW SYMPHONY!!!!!!!!! *does the mesopotanian dance of joy* ^^

Winamp has once again been creepy: during Kate's interviw with Ms LeQ it was playing "Ich will" by Rammstein to be more exactly first the line:"Ich will, daß ihr mir vertraut" (I want you to trust me) and as Kate noticed the scan
"Ich will eure stimmen hörn / Ich will die Ruhe störn" (I want to hear your voices / I want to disturb the peace).
