[So I hear you guys like the one-joke Micro-Stories. In that case, here are a couple of homeless gags that have been rattling around the shop for a little while. --G.]

1: Ridin'

Titans Tower
Pérez Island, New Avalon

"Oh, man," Courtney Whitmore moaned, slumping onto the bench in front of her locker and resting her forehead against the cool metal of its door. "It is way past my bedtime."

"Seriously," Cyborg agreed, yawning hugely.

"It's not just the hour, it's the mileage," declared Wally from one of the shower cubicles, his voice echoing off the tiles. "We've been all over this town tonight. I saw neighborhoods I didn't even know were there."

"I hear that," said Robin heartily. He peeled off his mask, stuck it in the sleeve pocket of his unfastened uniform jacket, and started glumly taking stock of all the used-up supplies in his utility belt. "I haven't had a night this long since our first test patrol in your new car," he added with a glance at Batgirl.

Cassie Cain pushed her own mask back off her head, letting it hang behind her neck, and nodded. She knew exactly what time he was talking about.

"This is DJ Bigtime and you're listening to the All Night Hiphopathon on Power 106!"

Robin and Batgirl glanced at each other, then at the Batmobile's central console. Robin poked at a couple of the controls, but the display remained resolutely stuck on the message, MWM SIGNAL LOCKED.

"I guess Cy hasn't worked out all the bugs yet," said Batgirl.

"Maybe we should go back," Robin mused.

"We'd never hear the end of it."

"We may never hear the end of this," Robin countered, raising his voice to be heard. Outside the car, the Kitchen's corner boys were turning to look, their interest piqued not so much by the approach of the Batmobile as by the thunderous bass emitting from it. To Robin's surprise, a few of them actually waved as the long, low black car cruised past. Not knowing quite what else to do, and feeling slightly ridiculous, he waved back from the passenger window.

"Yo, Rob," one of them called. "Girlfriend got some kickin' cans in there, yo!"

Robin glanced at Batgirl. "I think he means the speakers."

"Thank you, I knew that."

Remembering the occasion well, Cassie nodded sagely.

"They see us rollin'," she said, "they hatin'."

The other Titans paused; even Wally leaned around the corner of the shower, his hair dripping, to stare at her.

"... What," she said.

Gryphon considered what he saw, then nodded thoughtfully.

"Well, the costume is a definite improvement," he said. "You're a lot less likely to be mistaken for Dr. Midnight, for a start."

Tim Drake sighed ruefully. "I'm never going to live that down, am I?"

"Probably not as long as you stay in this town," said the Chief with a smile. "Anyway, that works. I'm not sure about your new codename, though."

Drake raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong with it?"

"Well... you may not know it's the name of a chain of hamburger shops in the Centaurus sector."

"Really? I didn't know that."

Gryphon nodded. "Mm. And it's particularly popular on Cargg, which means that every time you get mentioned around here lately - "

Lu Durgo put her head in at the door. "Chief, that vampire girl is here to see you. Says it's urgent. Hey, Tim."

"Miss Durgo," said Drake.

"I'll be right with her, Lu," said Gryphon.

"OK, I'll tell her," Lu replied. Then, as she turned to go, both men could hear her singing, "Reeeeeed Robin! Yummmm."

Drake blinked at the Chief.

" - that happens," Gryphon finished without missing a beat. "I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess it wasn't the effect you were going for." He considered. "Though in fairness it does indicate that you might have a shot," he added.

"Hmm. Well," said Drake with a perfectly straight face, "I'll have to take that under advisement."

BWAHAHAHA!

Say, Gryph, if Tim went Red Robin, does that suggest that a certain homicidal test-tube brat may be added to the UFverse soon?

While I can understand sticking to the current status quo, you have to admit his dialogue is a lot of fun to write.

I'm having a day like that letter Hunter S. Thompson wrote to the people who were producing the Rum Diary movie, which was at the time in Development Hell (it finally came out last year, long after Thompson's death, 13 years after the novel's publication, 50 years after it was written). The one in which he describes the process as a "waterhead fuckaround". That's sort of what I think about almost everything* they've done in the Batman franchise since Whatever The Fuck The Most Recent Last-Crisis-Ever Was Called. It particularly irks me that they kept the little fucksack when the Great Upfuck gave them the perfect excuse to pretend he never existed.**

I guess I simply do not see the value in having a Robin who is actually evil while in office. At least Jason Todd wasn't evil when he was Robin. Kind of a cock, yes, Jason was always that, but not an actual, knife-carrying, murder-oriented Obvious Villain. It's like Clark Kent shacking up with Lex Luthor's secretary.

Boy, I guess I've kind of ruined the tone, huh? Please go back to Post Zero and enjoy the jokes again now.

Not only that, but they kept his lame ass and got rid of what I, personally, think was the best thing to happen to the bat books since Killing Joke (the intrepid and utterly badass Ms. Cain as Batgirl)

To get back on the original thread, however, the deadpan "I know" was fantastic, and the "You apparently have a chance" thing was brilliant.

Indeed, I have a great love for Cassie, though she doesn't necessarily have to be Batgirl to receive it. They had already kind of screwed that gig in the ear for her before Evil Lad came along anyway.

Well, see, there's the thing. There may well be bits out there that do so indicate. I do not, a priori, disbelieve such a possibility. It's just that they're not the bits I've seen*, and under the circumstances, why would I go seek out more of his appearances in a bid to achieve greater understanding? My only motivation is that my lack of faith in the current DC editorial regime means that I have a fairly long list of candidates for the UF Shelter. Damian is simply the most annoying.

(Others include Jaime Reyes, his ENTIRE supporting cast, Static, Bart Allen... actually, now that I think of it, pretty every single DC character below legal age, whether they have powers or not. Including Billy Batson.)

Jaime Reyes is the current Blue Beetle in the DCU. Wikipedia has a good summary of his history.

Back when I was employed, I said to Gryph that I thought he'd love Blue Beetle, even though Guy Gardner showed up (and also that he'd actually like Guy's appearance). I decided that I would prove this and bought him the first three trades, sending it to him in Maine.

This is why we need to find a slot for that bunch. I keep thinking - like DC did - we should have him join the Titans, if only because:

a) they get the whole 'and now my life is weird' thing

and

b) most of them would be fairly chill with Paco and Brenda hanging out too, because they probably would get roped into Lex and Querl's Rebuilding This Stuff Days and maybe those two would come out of the garage a little more.

Well, I'm very much in agreement with you. Brat is annoying, and should have never been created, (or at least, should have been very different from the $#!+ they gave us), but Spoiler Batgirl was quite cool. Mind you, I also liked her as just Spoiler, or as Robin - but that's partly because my mind went to an interesting 'Batgirl and Robin' place when she was in the stop-light suit.

You know, I didn't intend to imply that you had to do this every time someone makes a reference. That shit's gonna get tedious, is all I'm saying. :)

So, does this mean we may finally see something more of Saya?
Or have you added another vampire girl to the cast, and just not gotten around to posting stories about her yet?

While it is entirely conceivable that the IPO has more than one female vampire on staff, odds are Lu is in fact referring to Saya and not, say, Mina Murray, or Josie Maran from the "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" video.
