#0, Minor "Website Not Found" Errors
Posted by Verbena on Dec-31-16 at 09:03 AM
FYI, last night and this morning I ran into errors trying to load the main page, when no other sites had an issue. A few reloads corrected the problem, and it was nothing more than a minor inconvenience, but in case it's a symptom of something more serious I thought I should make this known.

OK, I'll run it by Dave, see what he says. (Guessing it was probably a maint window on the vhost or suchlike.)

Clarification requested: Was this a "website not found" error page from the server, a la a 404 page, or was it your browser telling you it couldn't find the address? The latter was probably a DNS hiccup (hard to tell now where in the chain).

Umm, hmm. I'm sorry, I can't recall. I -want- to say it was the latter, but I don't have a copy of the page saved and I can't swear by it. Regardless, I haven't had an issue since, so hopefully it isn't a big deal.

If I get the error again, I will make a note of which it is. Rabe, do you happen to remember?

This has happened to me twice over the last week, now. Both times it was, most likely, a DNS error(it was not a 404). Once on the 4th, and then last night(local time).

Hmm. Hard to trace, DNS being what it is. I haven't heard of there being any trouble with the root servers we use...

I'm getting DNS errors right now on both eyrie-productions.com and eyrie.net. Of the two DNS servers which handle both domains, ns2.gweep.net is fine but miranda.dragonmage.net isn't:

$ dig +short www.eyrie-productions.com @ns2.gweep.net
epu.donnerjack.com.

$ dig +short www.eyrie-productions.com @miranda.dragonmage.net

I've been getting them from time to time on my iPad, but not on my laptop. Off the top of my head the only difference I can think of is that I'm pretty sure I've got my iPad set to use google's DNS instead of my ISPs.

EDIT: scratch that, they both use the same DNS servers, so what the hell.

This came up again yesterday, briefly leading to a situation where only Google's public IP servers could resolve EPU addresses, at least from my house. It turned out to be one of the servers having gotten hung up during a reboot and needing to be kicked. Everything should be OK now. The domain has not inadvertently been allowed to expire. I'm just putting that out there. :)
