OK, most favorite moment, least favorite moment, anything else? Go. :-)

Favorite moment: watching the cruiser go to hyperspace through Snoke's ship.

Least favorite moment: Leia pulling herself back into the bridge (it broke my suspension of disbelief, mostly because while I know one can hypothetically survive in hard vacuum, the explosive fire-laden decompression should have done a bigger number on her, I think.) There are better ways to show just how awesome Leia is than this.

Sobbing moment: Luke's passing. I can't even call it a death - he went out like a Jedi, and he wasn't alone, and he's *clearly* not gone, but...it did me in in a way that Han's death never could have. Possibly because for Luke it was a redemption, whereas for Han, not so much.

Gleeful moment: Thinking, "Huh, Luke's beard is brown, I wonder why his beard is brown, it was grizzled grey a little while ago...I guess there's a lot of frost on the island? ...Oh!"

The entire cinema went dead silent at that moment. I swear, it was like no one dared breathe until the sound came back to the movie, and then there was cheering. That entire sequence was brilliant.

It was totally awesome as a moment and as an effect, but the worldbuilder in me went "....And why did you need the bombers when you could stick thrusters and a hyperdrive on an asteroid...?"

I ended up giving this a lot of thought afterwards. Basically, the only reasons Admiral Hondo was able to ram Snokes ship was because she was already so close she could actually aim well enough to hit, and because Snokes ship was so damn insanely slow it actually couldn't get out of the way in time.

And even then, while the Star Destroyers were torn apart as collateral damage, Snokes ship survived, even if it was incredibly damaged. Lightspeed ramming is an incredibly situational tactic, and the odds against it working is likely part of the reason Hux was so caught off guard by it.

Not to mention really costly, as the ship doing the ramming certainly didn't survive. Though I agree with how slow Snoke's ship is, as the bridge crew's response wasn't 'dodge' it was 'kill it before it works'.

My biggest gripe about the scene is two-fold.

1. Why not ram with the smaller ships? Though I guess in this case its because no one through about it.

2. Whey did anyone have to stay in the ship at all? Hondo was in a docking bay watching the transports leave, so no one was on the bridge at all while she traveled back up there and everything seem fine. This is also true of the small transports; are capital ships not fitted with a basic auto-pilot?

Finally got to see this last night, so...

Favorite moment: There's a lot of stuff I loved in this one, but I think the very end with the kids telling the story of Luke's last stand is kind of the perfect moment to end a Star Wars movie on.

Least favorite moment: Probably the way they kept whittling down the Resistance through the end of the chase scene. I know why they were doing it & the payoff was fantastic, it just got hard to watch.

Best comedy: Pretty much every time Hux gets dunked on, which is a good 80% of his screen time. I'd feel bad for him... but then he's a Space Nazi, so fuck 'im. :)

Best fist-pump moment: The Millennium Falcon never disappoints. She's always there when you need her the most.

Random observation: So, when the crystal fox critters showed up did anybody else think "Hey, Eevees!" or is it just me?

Not only a Space Nazi, but Percy Weasley the Space Nazi. (Same actor.)

Who is an irishman playing an Age of Imperialism Englishman. Gleeson is fantastic at making Hux such a clear monster, even when the character is actually right about something.

It didn't occur to me until some time later as I reflected on the film, but I too noticed the resemblance. They're clearly the Rock-type evolution.

I think it's the whole "comes swooping down like the cavalry charge and gives the rest of the heroes some breathing room".

One day, one day I will be able to say what I mean without accidentally writing the exact opposite thing. Today... is not that day.

Favorite: Yoda saying Young Skywalker. Missed you, I have." After that shit from the prequels saying he doesn't miss his friends when they are gone. Space Grandpa will always miss you!

Unfavorite: The whole Finn and Rose Adventure was disappointing and kinda lame. The pay off of kids telling Luke's Stand was great but I was checking my watch the whole time they were in the Vegas Sector.

The Vegas Sector part was a bit weak. Among other things, they needed the air traffic controller telling them that parking was 300,000 credits to explain why Finn and Rose parked on the beach instead of using Docking Bay 94 or something.

On the other hand, it did set up Finn's realization that he isn't just a former First Order guy trying to find himself. He's Rebel scum, and proud of it.

Yes, exactly. Could the whole section used another go-round in the oven? Sure, I don't dispute that. But TFA-Finn was still more in 'survival and safety of Self/Rey/Poe/Friends' mode and hadn't yet bought into the Resistance on its own merits (instead of just using it for his own ends, like getting to Starkiller Base primarily to find Rey). Since TLJ picks up pretty quickly after TFA ended (with Finn incommunicado at the end of TLJ), there's not much time to continue character development.

It still shows in the first part of TLJ, when he's prepared to bail out on the Resistance in order to save Rey. It takes coming up with what looks like a better idea to set up the whole Vegas Sector sequence.

True, exactly! Heck, -Finn- was the one who swiped the quantum tracker when Leia dropped it (since he'd found out where Rey was from Leia), so on the off chance Rey decided to return, she'd be homing in on him, not the Resistance fleet with Leia on it.

Of course, they all ended up on the Supremecy anyway, but for different reasons....

Forgot to say: not least favorite, but least sense-making;free-fall bombs, in space. I mean, sure, the ship is big, but not THAT big.

It's something that's shown up before, at least. The TIE Bombers in Empire Strikes Back worked that way, too.

For awhile, Star Wars moved away from "bombs fall straight down, even in space" to a more torpedo bomber aesthetic. (They're proton TORPEDOES after all.) Things would only fall straight down when bombing a planet.

Recently they've begun moving back to "bombs fall straight down." In Clone Wars, Rebels, Rogue One, and now this the bombers pass "over" ships and drop their unpowered payloads rather than approaching and launching torpedo (basically missiles) salvos.

I'm okay with this in some cases; a flock of Y-Wings or B-Wings zipping across a Star Destroyer as their payloads rain down upon it can look really cool.

But it just really did not work in TLJ.

Nothing will ever convince me that those bombers weren't designed as planetary bombardment, in-atmosphere bombers that the Resistance re-purposed as space-based bombers because they had literally nothing else to hand.

I mean. They are demonstrably worse than the Y-Wing at their jobs, and the Y-Wing is a fifty-year-old design.

I can't recall where I saw it now, but there is some kind of official explanation that it's not gravitation pulling the bombs down but some kind of magnetic attraction. In the bombs.

Take that for what it's worth.

It's not that the ship masses enough to have a gravitational field, but Star Wars ships do have artificial gravity. How far out from the hull does that field extend? Star Wars tech artificial gravity is fairly advanced, up to the existence of gravity based Interdiction fields to prevent ships from going to Hyperspace. (If you want to get technical, Interdictors were part of the Extended Universe which is now non-canon, but they were re-introduced in Star Wars: Rebels, which is considered part of the new official canon.)

I'll admit I assumed the bombs were actually launched from the ships.

I agree that the bombers are almost certainly meant to be fly-from-space-to-surface bombers.

My biggest problem with the screen really is that the dreadnought has such a obvious "bomb here please" weakness.

I haven't seen the movie, I won't until it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray but I saw a youtube video (link below as I'm sick and can't be bothered with forum code) that states the bomber has artificial gravity generators and if it works the way I think it does (which could be wrong for all I know but it makes sense to me) it seems that that bombs would indeed get a gravity assisted launch from the onboard AG systems.

Edit I should state that the video above uses the Official cross sections book for the movie.
