But they've just announced that the captain of the USS Discovery in the upcoming Star Trek series is...

Sonequa Martin-Green.

Viewers of popular television will know her as Sasha from The Walking Dead; since I only watch total garbage because I am a garbage person, I know her as a minor character from series 3 of Once Upon A Time. She played a woman who believes herself to be working for a secret society with extraordinary technology that is working to eradicate magic from the world. That they are called the Believers when that series' Big Bad was Peter Pan should clue you in on how well that turned out for her. In short, she got stranded on a mysterious island and had her heart ripped out by Rumplestiltskin, who is the son of Peter Pan and also the Black Fairy from one of the godforsaken Disney TV movies involving fairies liebe Arceus this show is weird and dumb.

Still, she sold the hell out of the role, and I'd like to see what happens if and when she gets some good material to work with. =]

What I'm saying is:

Please, please, please don't suck.

Hang on, is the the captain or the lead? Since they've said the lead on Discovery won't be the captain. (Or did they walk that back while I wasn't looking? Also entirely possible.)

Also also, isn't that show supposed to launch, like, next month? They're just announcing the casting now? What the? The timetable for this show has always seemed a little weird, but that's above and beyond...

The last I heard, the launch had been put back a few months. At this point, when it's actually going to run would probably need an ouija board to work out.

The lead, Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford, aka "Number One." And before you ask, they're saying she's not supposed to be the same character played by Majel Barrett, but named in honor of her...or something. It's all rather weird and confusing, even for a new Trek series.

The release date is a moving target these days. First they said January 2017, then that got pushed back to March 2017. Now they're insisting it will be May 2017, but assume even that date is subject to change. I'm beginning to suspect that this series is slowly slipping into Development Hell.

Correct, she is the XO of the Discovery, called Number 1 by the captain. Much like Riker was called during TNG.

That moniker "Number 1" in general is a homage to the original pilot of the ST:TOS in which Majel Barrett-Roddenberry played the second in command of the enterprise and was only ever referred to as "Number 1".

In general, the moniker is supposed to be a Military tradition within Star Fleet. But so far only TNG and the original Pilot and now Discovery have ever used it.

Thanks!

Just watched the teaser trailer for it on youtube. I don't know about anybody else, but about the ship itself all I can say is: Ew.

The one with the ship lighting up and moving out of dock? That's supposed to be a rough workup, not supposed to reflect the final quality of the sfx, and not supposed to be the final design of the ship. An awful lot of supposes in there...
