#0, UF and/or Eyrie wiki?

I understand that this has been brought up before (though that link's over two years old), but would it be possible to set up a wiki in the vein of Memory Alpha covering either Undocumented Features or the collective works of EPU? Either hosted on the site or on Wikia? Either that, or do some serious work on the UF section of the Fan Fiction wiki, but that's so swamped with garbage and actual fics (which are largely also garbage) that I'm tempted to just cut my losses and import what's there into a new wiki.

I would very much not like to see the latter happen. As for the former, sure, it'd be possible, and we've played with the idea a few times, but nothing much has come of it, mainly because we're already kind of strapped for the time and mental bandwidth to do the projects we're already supposed to be working on in anything like a timely fashion. It's not entirely outside the realm of possibility, though.

And I cant say I blame you for really prefering to keep it in house if at all possible.

Well, in the specific case of Wikia, I have three main objections. One is that Wikia sites are ass-ugly. Another (something of a corollary to the first) is their externally generated ads, the potential for third-party abuse of which we have recently seen.

The big one, though, is that they require all content published on one of their wikis to be published under the GDFL, and that's a one-way trap door I simply don't want to step on. I've seen people who started Wikia wikis lose control of them completely.

Besides, a UF wiki would violate their TOS:

Any content you upload or post to any Wikia, Inc. wiki must be compatible with the relevant license (for example, the GFDL for any Wikia, or the relevant CC license for other wikis), not violate another person's intellectual property or infringe on any copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or other proprietary rights.

Do I want to go down that rabbit hole on a commercial website administered by other people whom I do not know? No, no I do not.

Well, technically, a wiki wouldn't violate anyone's IP. It'd just be about something that does. :P Besides, they allowed a fan fiction wiki.

Okay, so would it be particularly difficult to get MediaWiki set up on rei?

And that wouldn't be asking for trouble at all...

Impossible, actually, since rei was decommissioned several months ago. As for setting it up in our new hosting situation, I don't know - it's not my computer, and I don't do any of the system administration any more. The guy who does is running the machine on his own time and donating the space and bandwidth, and one doesn't like to presume too much on his time for setting up new system widgets.

Anyway, setting up the infrastructure is one thing, but then we'd have to populate it...

I'm not saying it's something we would never do, but it's not high on my list.

Oh? Shows what good it does me to use the about page to try and act informed. (Thanks for changing it, though. :P)

Heh, yeah, I'd forgotten it was there until I asked myself, "Where'd he get the server's old name? We re-homed the site weeks ago... "
