#0, An assortment of UF-related questions
Posted by Offsides on Oct-13-09 at 11:00 AM
I've been re-reading a bunch of assorted UF stories lately and a number of questions have occurred to me. Apologies if some of them have already been asked and answered, but I think most, if not all, are new. Some may be more suited to certain sub-forums, but I'm being lazy and doing it all in one post...

Is Kahm Santova still alive, and if so is she aware of Darth Vader's re-awakening? In fact, was she aware of his hibernation to begin with? And is Darth Vader aware of Kahm (if she's still alive) and Rianna?

What is Magneto up to these days? We know Xavier is running the school, and given the change of demographics Magneto's worldview has to be rather different these days. I'm sure he's anti-Psi Corps, but given the diversity of the universe and that fact that 'mutants' are readily accepted in at least some areas, I expect he's no longer trying to take over :)

I was thinking about Nick Stokes' Detian heritage, and it made me wonder if he wasn't the child of an old Wedge Defender, but perhaps the grandchild. And that led me to wonder if there was any way (in UF) to determine a genetic link with more than one generation difference? I'm specifically NOT asking who his parentage is, as that with either be revealed 'on-camera' or not; I'm just asking if the tech-base could do it.

I though I had more questions, but they escape me at the moment...

Thanks in advance for any answers (especially straight ones :)).

You don't need the future to tell that, you can trace familial DNA today. The main issue with that is having all the appropriate samples to compare with. As of this writing, there is no official genetic trace of Nick's father. Trust me, Nick's a fine criminalist, and has been since college. He's looked. :)

Okay, let's see.

>Is Kahm Santova still alive,

Yes.

>and if so is she aware of Darth Vader's re-awakening?

No.

>In fact, was she aware of his hibernation to begin with?

Probably not.

>And is Darth Vader aware of Kahm (if she's still alive) and Rianna?

I don't think so. We did have a prototype for a scene in which Vader and Rianna met, once, but it was several revisions of the Outer Rim setting ago and wouldn't actually work any more for any number of reasons.

>What is Magneto up to these days?

Well, it's funny you should ask that.

>And that led me to wonder if there was any way (in

>difference?

As wedge has noted, that's easy-peasy now, let alone in the 25th century. The problem is that the only thing COGENT returns if you run Nick's DNA against it is his own IPO personnel file. Whoever his Detian forebear is, he (or she) is apparently not in the system. This is not unusual, given that the whole Wedge Defense Force HR database (and most of the pre-Exile Detians were, or had been, in the WDF) Went Away in 2288.

First off, thanks for the answers!

OK, knowing how the idea revision process works, I expect that this type of thing happens all the time :)

I know you can trace ancestry via direct line female lineage using mitochondrial DNA, and via direct line make lineage using the Y chromosome, but I didn't realize that you could trace back multiple generations without having the intermediate DNA profiles. I would think that would be somewhat difficult if you didn't have certainty a la the above two methods...

But interesting that whoever it is, they're either still out in the cold, or (unfortunately) dead. I'm sure whenever he finds out, it'll be as much of a surprise to him as it will to us :)

Thanks again!

The more distant the relationship the less reliable this sort of thing gets, but there is enough to link out a couple of steps. You also cannot tell between a grandfather and an uncle because they have the same level of relationship.

This is with the couple of dozen sites currently used for DNA profiles. Add a few hundred years of development and you are looking at having at least a half-dozen sites on each chromosome and a much better way of flagging probable relatives.

Considering the size of the Dyson Sphere, I can totally see there being such a warehouse.

I seem to recall the answer, the last time someone asked, was along the lines of "parked in orbit around Saturn, exactly opposite Mimas, so no one ever sees the both of them at the same time."

I can't see UF-Gryphon leaving it in orbit of Saturn. First, why fly it that far? Secondly, well, I just realized my second reason was faulty logic (that he wouldn't put in easy reach of the jerkwads in control of Earthforce, except this would have happened long before their jerkwadishness became apparant)

I'm sure that, if it's not in or around the Sphere, then it could easily be orbiting a nearby brown dwarf star or something.

Edit for stupid typos

If I recall correctly, this was asked before, and it's in the same system with the Dyson sphere, with WDF folks taking it apart to study it or something like that.

I would assume the reason it's never mentioned again is a) Core stuff is being rewritten anyways and b) it's probably partially dissassembled and otherwise not in a useful state anyways.

I'm betting that Washu bought it for scrap, hollowed it out, and turned it into a hyperdimensional testing crucible.

That's just silly. If you're going to go to all the trouble of making a hyperdimensional anything, why would you bother making the outside that big? That'd be like setting the chameleon circuit of your TARDIS to emulate the entire Broadcasting House Cardiff.

Maybe, but since when did Washu do much on a sane and sensible scale?

Besides, with an actual size of 120 km in diameter, she could probably make an extradimensional space large enough to stick a whole planet in, and the AT&T's reactors could power the production of that space. Now I don't know what she'd use it for, but it'd fill her heart with pride to see that powerful a machine being put to good use.

Since this is a thread of questions, I might as well ask one, especially as I don't want to put it in the original thread as it seems somewhat out of place there. Utena's (typed) signature on the letter "Operation TRIDENT: The Hard Part" has the middle initial "R", and I cannot for the life of me recall if we've ever seen that before, and if so, what it stands for.

My guess is "Ravenhair", which is why we haven't seen it before.

clg is correct; it stands for "Ravenhair", and the only other place it's appeared so far is her official report on Operation TRIDENT, because before said operation, she wasn't using that name. She didn't have a middle name before then - most Cephireans (or at least most from the central region of Nihon) don't.

Ah. I feel like facepalming because now it seems so obvious, but it's been months since I read the last Sympony installment, and it simply didn't occur to me.

Thanks.
