I fully appreciate that I last teased this story just short of three years ago, then totally lost the thread of it and have failed to get anywhere since. You have every right to be annoyed with me about that. I could blame the Great Brain Adventure... and I will, because I'm not proud. But here! Have a poster.

it's very pretty... i especially like the modified use of the sheppard's prayer :)

the only thing that niggles me is the plane: it seems to owe more to the f-18 than the viper. i assume that's deliberate, seeing as it's a veritech and all, but i somehow imagined it still looking more like a lawn dart than something i'm likely to see landing at hanscom this summer...

That's because it's the VF-1-82 (aka SERAPH BLUE), not the VX. If you'll remember the last story, Admiral Adama pulled the VXs, and Max Sterling arranged for Kozue to fly SERAPH BLUE instead.

Eric's got this one sorted: the aircraft in the illustration is a VF-1 Valkyrie, not a Viper. The Viper Mark X appears on the cover to Rogue Squadron issue 1 - I won't link it here because it's quite large, but here's a link to the main RS page, from which it's pretty easy to get to. In fighter mode the VX does indeed look very much like the previous model, which was the classic Viper (what the reboot Galactica series calls the Mark II; in UF, the Mark VIII) - but it's not what Kozue is flying in #5.

(That's odd, I don't have a version of the #1 cover illo without all the graphics on it available on the website. Have to look around my desktop system and see if I've got it kicking around.)

Only one I know of is in the SotS imagery section, under "Commissioned Artwork."

Ah, okay, I just didn't think to link it on the Rogue Squadron page. That was silly of me...

Now, see here? Dangit, I've been here at my folks house packing up my few remaining boxes of possessions, which include several Valkyrie model kits... I have this feeling that once I get to building them, I won't need any of the stock livery decals.

I've been comptimplating getting a VF-1S from somewhere and doing it up as 8-Ball One. Hell, it wouldn't even be the first time I've ever done a Model kit in fictional liverly.
Hey Gryph, is that P-40 Mockup from forever ago accurate as far as markings goes?

Either way, It's still good to hear that you haven't completly forgotten about poor Kozue and her merry friends.

More or less, yeah, if you filter them through the way the markings on Skull One are set up in the original Macross. See if I can find a couple of reference images here...

Okay! More information than you wanted, coming right this way. Eight-Ball One is royal blue where Skull One is yellow, the vertical tails are black and marked as seen in the P-40 pic (with the device from the center of the squadron patch and the fighter's ID number below that), and it says "WEDGE DEFENSE FORCE" where Skull One says "UN SPACY". The "001"s are the same because Eight-Ball One was the first item in the Wayward Son's air wing table of equipment. The ship's name (which the UN Spacy seems to have omitted in the canonical markings) would've been on the sides of the intakes, just above that red CAUTION INTAKE triangle decal, and then below that (as if the warning triangles were pointing at it) the squadron's number, 261. (Though the Eight-Ball Squadron was technically based on the Prometheus, not the SDF-17 proper, the fighters were always marked as belonging to the Wayward Son, as previously discussed here.)

The "8" and "B" flanking the WDF seal on the P-40 are just there to give it more of a WWII flavor, they don't correspond to anything the Golden Age WDF would have put on a VF-1 - ditto the flowery script on the pilot's name under the canopy. Typefaces in general, in fact, are for WWII flavor on the P-40; the Valkyries would've been marked in the same one as their Macross counterparts, with two exceptions, below:

If you want to get really fiddly, cockpit nametags in the day were a little different than they are in the source; you can't really see it at that resolution, but on Skull One there are white capitals in the black stripe on the coaming that say "PILOT R. FOCKER". The WDF didn't bother with "PILOT" because it's a single-seat aircraft, it's bleeding obvious that whoever sits there is the pilot, and we did put callsigns on, so the white letters in the black coaming stripe would have been the pilot's rank and name, and then the callsign would be centered below that (and below the black stripe), in black. So on Eight-Ball One it would've said

(That font is called CA Alternative Three, if you're curious.)

The squadron number marking is as it appears in the official squadron patch (just the numerals, not the "VVF-"):

in a font called, I promise I'm not making this up, CA Pussy Galore.

There you go, artists and modelers! All the detail I can provide without being able to draw a proper reference myself. :)

Awesome. I'm setting aside a hull for this. For extra challenge, I'm probably gonna model EB1 in Battloid configuration.

It'll make a nice change from modelling WH40K miniatures!

Well, that handles the pilot and squadron markings, but did Gryphon ever mark any kill silhouettes on his Valkyrie? I imagine such a thing would take up quite a bit of space just for the sheer variety of mecha, fighters, and ships he's wasted over the centuries, much less the quantity of each.

Sure, but it's steganographic. You have to zoom in really, really close on that black stripe around the bottom of the canopy.

I think this falls under the 'better late than never' category, though I admit it is stretching it.

Made my evening regardless though.

and thinking about Rogue Squadron, remember back in issue #3 when it came up that Kozue and some of her squadronmates have a band?

Well, here's the flag that they hang up at the back of the stage at their gigs. Unofficial T-shirts have also been seen on members of the squadron tech crew.

Y'know, I just registered something...If we imagine that the pilot in the picture is in fact Lt. Kozue and not Brig. Gen. Sterling, we can assume she's glaring at the superimposed text as if to say: "Well, THANKS! Your Confidence is appreciated!"

I read "NSFW" and got a completely different interpretation of the image before I actually saw it.

But in any case, that's an awesome picture, and hilarious text.

So did I, come to think of it. Probably a lot of people did.

“They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.”
