#0, just a few thoughts.....
Posted by ckosacranoid on Aug-29-12 at 08:11 PM
i have to say that UF took me the better part of a month to read and i am still trying to figure out how to word the review i wanted to write.
i had to ask a couple of things that i noticed in reading different things

how can the top gear crew be 400 years old and not be members of the WDF?

what is the name of Anthy and corwins girl?

Which one of the girl is pregent Juri or kate? and what did they have and the name of thier baby?

overall i have loved the whole story, i must say that the sword arc is the coolest for some reason. not sure why.

what ever happened to the gay guy in the pink cyclon from chapter one anyway? who was very amsuing going toe to toe with largo.

i must say i really loved a lot of the charaters expact one. Please do not take offece to the real zoner, but the zoner in the setting really leaves something from likeing him. I think it might just be his running away to much or just withdraws from everything when the crap happens. i think there is something to be said when the bad guys I like better for some reason....not sure why.

why would redneck during exile being on the target list for bounty hunting when he had only been in the WDF for 10 years at most. he had been a founder of the confeds merc chapter for the better part of 200 years. then ups and falls off the face of the earth for a different 100 years.

what ever happaned to the two ships that made up the wings of the wayward son anyway? i never seen anything for what happened in the storys from the website?
i seen what happened to the strelings and wolfgang.

speaking of wolfgang, what did he do with everyone from the ship yards when he left and why did he go looking for the dyson schere anyway?

what was the rough size of the WFD anyway, just rough numbers and ships?
what happened to most of the people who where memebers for a rough guild got taken out over the years anyway? i know the force had to be pretty good size, not just the wayward son, but lots of support and traing staff.
much less what happened to members who had been retired from the force for years? would they have been on the list of being taken out?

the story is mindboggling for how much tv, anime, comics that you guys have put into the world. it is very amsuing and thanks for writing all this even if it took most of june to read everything and staying up till dawn reading storys..damn you all for writing so well.....

>how can the top gear crew be 400 years old and not be members of the
>WDF?

WDF membership wasn't the only way to get onto the ride for the long haul - and they may have been for a while, long long ago. I've never developed it because it's never been important enough to worry about.

>what is the name of Anthy and corwins girl?

That hasn't been revealed yet.

>Which one of the girl is pregent Juri or kate? and what did they have
>and the name of thier baby?

If either Juri or Kate is going to have a child, I assure you it's news to me.

>why would redneck during exile being on the target list for bounty
>hunting when he had only been in the WDF for 10 years at most. he had
>been a founder of the confeds merc chapter for the better part of 200
>years.

You kind of answered your own question there. It wasn't from his WDF membership so much as his prominence in the Freespacer nation.

>what ever happaned to the two ships that made up the wings of the
>wayward son anyway? i never seen anything for what happened in the
>storys from the website?

Daedalus was last seen back on (or, well, near) Musashi; ReRob's plan in UF4 was to use the Phoenix as an FTL tow vehicle for her (why, I'm not sure, since Daedalus has her own FTL systems), but the situation developed so rapidly that the bigger ship had to be left behind, and for whatever reason, she hasn't been seen since. Prometheus has been refitted, and by the "present day" in FI (ca. 2410) she's the lead (right now only) carrier for the International Police Space Force's small but growing starfighter force.

>speaking of wolfgang, what did he do with everyone from the ship yards
>when he left and why did he go looking for the dyson schere anyway?

They'd already cleared off by the time he left, the situation having descended into outright panic by that point, and as for why he went looking for it, well... he more or less explains that in his speech in Reunion. How he found out about it hasn't been revealed, but what he wanted it for, that's more or less spelled out there - as a fortress to house the rebuilding and rebirth of the WDF.

>what was the rough size of the WFD anyway, just rough numbers and
>ships?

Before UF3? It had only the one really big combatant (the SDF-17); the Intelligence Division had a few dozen scouts and infiltrator ships; Exploration Command had a dozen or so exploration/mapping ships big enough to have proper names (of which Enterprise was the most famous); and the Deep Space Patrol numbered about the same, of which Righteous Indignation and Delphinus were the best-known. In terms of personnel, I've no idea - lots.

In and after UF4, it's much bigger - at least a hundred capital ships, probably many more, with increased personnel numbers to match. I haven't given it a really close examination.

>much less what happened to members who had been retired from the force
>for years? would they have been on the list of being taken out?

GENOM's trackdown was pretty thorough, because they'd had a mole on Lord F's staff (Decker) who provided them with (among other things) extensive personnel data. The 2290s and early 2300s were a bad time to have ever had anything to do with the WDF, but then, they were a bad time in general...

Wow - that's a lot for one mouthful...

A suggestion for the future - UF is something best eaten in smaller chunks, at least from a "I want to comment on things" standpoint. Not that you did anything wrong, but there's just so much volume there it can be pretty hard to keep everything coherent if you don't limit yourself. :)

Also, as someone who has been reading UF since the Core stories were first published (well, I started at UF4, there are others here who predate me by a little bit), I can say with near 100% certainty that much of the old stories (primarily the Core series, plus a few others that are pretty obvious from the writing style) are best taken with a few tablespoons of salt - it's not that they're completely apocryphal, but with the evolution of the UFverse (and the authors' writing abilities), events of the newer stories are much more thoroughly planned out (not to mention better written). I kind of think of it as an oral tradition being written down at some point - the farther back from the 2400s you go in the UFverse, the more likely the story you get has lost some of its "fidelity" over the years of telling before it was committed. It's a good way to get the general sense of how the UFverse evolved, but don't assume that any particular detail is 100% accurate.

Anyway, welcome to the ride, and don't forget to check out the Mini-Stories if you haven't already.

However, I find it interesting when reading the older UF stories (not the Core, but the entire universe) to see how the story and characters were as originally written, and then how things changed later. For example, at the end of the FI story "No More Innocence" (no date on it) Kate is a kid chasing around Martin Rose's legs with other kids, Len is a rather well spoken toddler, and Priss is a babe in arms. In "Checkmate" (2 dates on it, 1994 and 1996), Kate is 5, Len is 2, and Priss isn't a year old yet. Makes me wonder if the comment somewhere in Symphony about K/G denying that Guy was named "Guy" because he was unexpected and K & G didn't have a name picked out for him is actually an in-joke, and that's actually close to what happened during writing the Symphony (he didn't exist until then).

Well, sort of. I mean, he's called "Guy" because he's based on Guy Shishio from King of Braves Gaogaigar, but he didn't exist when those earlier stories were written. Hell, Gaogaigar didn't exist when some of those earlier stories were written (it first aired in 1997, and I didn't see it until several years later.

thanks guys for the comments. the things with kate and juri is one of the chapters was set up i think athy or one of the other girls was going to use the bathroom and heard juri and kate talking about being with micky and i could have sworn that one of them said they where with child. it did not say which one. guess i will have to go back and try to find it in the later chapters...

as for reading in one sitting over the month...i guess it helps being out of work to do it one shot every night...and there are some very long chapters.

as for the minis i have read the omni bus stuff, i have read a few of the newer stuff. not a lot fo the storys a few. the one that made art of noice was cool though.

some of my fav charaters though are griffen and his kids, kate and all hers freinds are my fav for some reason...the duelest are cool parrying a lightsaber with a normal sword...epic
corwin is very cool.

the roses are very cool...the human transformer and the clay pigeions for a squard name with "pull". much less the dark wing thing going....

doc is very cool and its cool to see where the nickname came from i think...taking the weekend off and being back in an hour...that funny.

myth busters and jamie as a jedi knight....that is beyond rolling on the floor

windom and his brother....Morf as a jedi in black leather...and shades....priceless

yuri's boyfriend type r is cool....

redneck has been fun to read about...also being a sorta jedi....

darth vader and his new lease on life with taking the eva crew as a side kick group....being married to washa...the poor guy.....much less the 4 year terror of his dauther....

one last thought, the very open minded setting is cool, it just leaves the thought of who has griffen not had fun with? i have to say he makes james bond look tame though...and has cooler toys and better fighting skills....

>who has griffen not had fun with?

sigh.

OK, here's a little math: in 2410 he marks his 437th birthday. Now, if you figure he's been in the business for 419 of those years. According to the 2005 Mosher/Chandra/Jones research, "Males 30-44 report an average of 6-8 female sexual partners in their lifetime". Now, if the average male got started at 17 (which this same study indicates, rounding up from 16.9), and the oldest man in that survey group was 44, that's 27 years to have had... let's split the difference and say seven partners, or about one every four years.

Using those numbers, G wouldn't even reach statistical outlier status at age 437 unless he had more than about 109 pages in his little black book - which I sincerely doubt he has, though I am not inclined to go compiling a list.

So maybe we can give this one a rest? Just an idea.

i was not asking for his list of who he has done anything with. it was aimed more for a toss out line cause he does remind me lot of bond for dealing with things even being on the run for as long as he was. also being the added flavor of he is known as a bad ass out law, but ends up saving the day after having the moment of like han solo of trying to walk away and then turing around to save the day....

It's a fairly safe bet that she thinks she does, anyway.

From context, that seems... unlikely.

also, you have a peculiar concept of fun.

I think its more of a cumulative effect. Most of the women Gryph has been involved with are either effectively immortal, or have a very long lifespan, or are more current and still around. And there seem to be very few that could be called one night stands, and those mostly with women who were or became close friends. So for the most part they are all still around, are mostly either an ongoing romantic relationship or friends with benefits and after over 400 years they do add up. So now Gryph practically has a harem, which probably causes a few problems, but in a good way. I really can't think of anyone that Gryph has ever broken up with (or been dumped by). So I guess once you go Gryph, you're hooked for life :D

My definition of 'Fun' has been permanently warped by too much Dwarf Fortress. I therefore don't find his concept of fun peculiar at all.

Well, to be fair, how many of UF-G's paramours _haven't_ tried to stab or slice him, even if it's in a friendly context? Sparring with live steel would certainly count, and I'm pretty sure he'd consider that fun....

Perhaps, but for the record, he would most likely decline to go to bed with a woman who actually managed to stab him.*

So this weekend I was amusing the small child by scrolling through various images I've collected over the years - mostly fan art. And lo, what do we find? A comic of Corwin Ravenhaur doing valentines days shopping that ends with a panel joking about G's valentine card list. It looks like Dave menards art.
