... with the aid of one of my favorite bands.

I guess the prevailing wisdom goes something like this...

Mother, father
Look at your little monster
I'm a hero
I'm a zero
I'm the butt of the worst joke in history

I'm a lock without a key
A city with no door
A prayer without faith
A show without a score
A bad word, a wink, a nod, a shiver
An untold story, sex without fury, a creeping grey memory
I am
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete

Doctor, cure me
What is the cause of my condition?
This madness shoots me
Like bullets smashing glass in a silent movie

I'm a trap without a spring
A temple with no god
A jack without an ace
The tip of your tongue
I'm a promise in an unmailed letter
An unbuilt motor, deck without a joker, a creeping grey memory
I am
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete

Tell Saint Peter not to bet on me, yeah
I've got a naked obsession
A good intention gone bad
I am
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete

... but I prefer to look at things from an angle more like this.

We don't need any more mountains
Because the trail builders failed to give us passage there
So we can't reach the sky
We don't need any more failure
There is human tragedy that's written everywhere
We are all too young to die
Like a mystery that's here to stay
Some people never go away
'Cause they've got something to say:

Don't sell me short
You've been wrong too long
Don't brush me off
Just because I don't belong
Like it or not, I'm all you've got
Dispose me when I'm shot
Just don't sell me short
I might not be who you thought

We don't need any more fables
'Cause the writers have passed and left us lessonless
We must find our own way
We don't need any more privilege
There is vivid desperation that is powerless
That no surplus can repay
Like the fix of rapture in a trance
Oh fates are sealed by circumstance
So you've got to take a chance

Don't sell me short!
You've been wrong too long
Don't brush me off
Just because I don't belong
Pass me on by, ignore my cry
Forget me when I die
Just don't sell me short
Not while I'm still alive

Everybody's talking about heaven on earth
I'm still trying to figure out just what I'm worth
I'm full of emotion and stuff you can't contain
You just want to flush me down the drain
But you can't make me go away!

Don't sell me short!
You've been wrong too long
Don't brush me off
Just because I don't belong
Like it or not, I'm all you've got
Dispose me when I'm shot
Just don't sell me short
I might not be who you thought
You've been wrong too long
Don't brush me off
Just because I don't belong
Pass me on by
And forget me when I die
But don't sell me short
Not while I'm still alive

I can think of three characters who this could be, and I'm probably wrong on all counts, but that's a very interesting set of songs to think about.

Oh? Heres a fourth for you...

Zoner during one of his Angst periods. Especially during the Exile.

While I'll say you have a point, I'm not really sure Zoner counts as "borrowed", being one of the original authors and all.

I wasn't aware that there was "prevailing wisdom" regarding Zoner, either. :)

Heh. Yeah, it IS a strech, but given that Zoner originally wrote for Zoner, I could make the case that anytime G has to write a Zoner scene he IS techically borrowing him.

Oddly enough, Stranger Than Fiction is in my car's CD player right now, having played that very song as I pulled into work this morning.

And then of course, I read this. But there's too many borrowed characters in UF to be a good guesser based on two sets of lyrics, at least by me.

The New America is one of the more underrated albums in my opinion. I mean, "You've Got a Chance," "1000 Memories," "Whisper in Time," "The Hopeless Housewife," and the afore mentioned "Don't Sell Me Short?" I mean, jeez. And they've only gotten better since Brett Gurewitz rejoined.

Well, given one of the stories I know you are working on, and her past history, I'm guessing that this refers to Rachel Summers.

Nah, you want a song that's always - like, since the old-timey days before even the Marvel Super Heroes campaign, when the proto-X-Men-fanfic pre-Don Griffin version of me had nuclear blast powers and was almost nothing at all like the version that evolved in the game campaign - been associated with Ray around here?

Here you go.

Headbangers in leather
Sparks flying in the dead of the night
It all comes together
When we turn out the lights
50,000 watts of power
And it's pushing overload
The feast is ready to devour
Oh we'll never make it hold
'Bout to overload
To explode

It's your one-way ticket to midnight
Call it heavy metal
Eye to eye feeling just right
Call it heavy metal
Desperation on the redline
Call it heavy metal noise

Tight pants and lipstick
She's riding on the razor's edge
She holds her own against the boys
Cuts through the crowd just like a wedge
Ooh can you feel the static
So many contacts being made
We got up-front fanatics
Tearing down the barricades
To raze the stage
Can you feel the rage?

It's your one-way ticket to midnight
Call it heavy metal
Eye to eye feeling just right
Call it heavy metal
Desperation on the redline
Call it heavy metal noise

It's your one-way ticket to midnight
Call it heavy metal
Eye to eye feeling just right
Call it heavy metal

Heavy metal noise
Heavy metal noise
Call it
Heavy metal

Point, although I was thinking more of her "present" circumstances, timelost and amnesiac.

Now I'm starting to wonder if Lila Cheney is in the UF-verse. She IS associated with a Dyson sphere....

Nuclear Blast powers? Eish, to be young again...

Nice imagery, but I never saw her as a leather fetish girl. Sure, Priss but not Rachel. Perhaps I'm reading the wrong comics...

That version was revived in recent times, amusingly enough, as my main City of Heroes character, Captain Photon. (Bear in mind that this was "nuclear blast powers" in the sense that the Hulk has anything at all to do with gamma radiation - it's Comic Book Nuclear Energy. :)

Perhaps. Back in Excalibur, her costume was a skintight red leather catsuit with a row of spikes down the front. Make of that what you will. :)

Admittedly, this is a KISS doll site?

But http://otakuworld.com/index.html?/kiss/dolls/?/kiss/dolls/pages/rayxcal.htm is, in fact, what Rachel pranced around in off-duty in many an issue of the original Excalibur. QED, and, yes, Claremont.

I find this micro-heroes site invaluable for obscure costume pix:
