Iron Man moved carefully toward the aerodyne, trying to see
into its star-cracked windows. He didn't really want to get involved,
but if there were American soldiers here, they might need his help,
and he couldn't very well just walk away.
"HOLD IT!" a voice barked from behind him. The voice sounded
very Western. Iron Man froze.
"I'm an American," he said, putting his hands up.
"Turn around. Real slow," the voice commanded.
Iron Man complied - then almost laughed when he saw that the
man who was giving him orders held nothing but a standard-issue 9mm
autopistol. He'd been half-expecting a LAAW or something.
More reassuringly still, the guy was definitely an American,
or at least definitely not Chinese; he was over six feet tall and
black, with close-cropped hair and the jumpsuit of a U.S. Army aviator.
"Look, Warrant Officer... Rhodes," Iron Man said after peering
at the name tape on the man's jumpsuit, "I'm on your side. Really.
Do I sound even vaguely Chinese?"
"Take off your helmet," Rhodes said, emphasizing his point
with a pistol gesture.
"I can't."
"What?"
"I can't take off my helmet. It's bolted on. You'll have to
take it off me if you want it off. The wrench is in one of my belt
compartments."
Rhodes gave him a skeptical look. "... uh-HUH," he said.
"It's a prototype," Iron Man said, a bit lamely.
"I bet," Rhodes replied. He eyed the unusual figure before im
for a moment, then sighed and holstered his sidearm. "I don't suppose
my nine would do much to stop you anyway."
"Not unless you've got kinetic penetrators for it," Iron Man
replied.

I like how you say "Iron Man" and leave us wondering if it's Tony or Ben. Nice touch. CRUEL! But nice. ;)

given Zoner's other incarnations in the Eyrieverse - is this him? Or should we expect the 2030+ version of the Desert Eagle to be more his style? Although I really, really liked the use of Judge Dread's gun in the last episode. Nice Lawgiver...

rock on. This has been fun so far.

Eyrie doesn't have a tradition of redshirts that I can remember, and I somehow doubt that's likely to change now. If a "good guy" dies, I fully expect it will be meaningful to the story rather than being a gratuitous "look how dangerous X is!"

Uh, no; Zoner's about as white as white gets.

The sound effect it made in response to his mode selection is actually from Syndicate, which dates me, I know. :)

Oops, more reasons not to post when utterly exhausted - you read "black" as "wearing black".

but... I thought.. Zoner was playing himself in TIA.

back on the teaser.. I think the Iron Man in that teaser is the original Stark, as in Tony Stark :D

I seem to recall from what little I know about the Marvel Iron Man is that Rhodes wore the Warmachine suit.

where this fits in the story I don't know, but I think i'm going to enjoy finding out :D

For a time, while Tony was fighting his own, personal demons (Whiskey in particular), Rhodes WAS Iron Man. After Tony recovered (more or less) he took over as Iron Man again and, eventually, Rhodes took up War Machine.

For what it's worth, I'm inclined to agree; the mention of American soldiers and the Chinese seems to point to a conflict in Asia.

In the comics, Tony Stark was grievously injured while serving in Vietnam, which led to him build the life support breastplate that would become the Iron Man suit.

In TIA, it looks like Ben Stark was the one in need of a life support system... and Tony wasn't so lucky.

Of course, rampantly speculating about an Eyrie plot is about as useful as trying to solve a math problem by chewing bubblegum ;)

I don't know... both of them could have needed a life support breastplate, one doesn't necessarily exclude the other :D but i'lld give that they probably needed it for different reasons :D

From context clues in TIA #1, I'd guess that Tony didn't make it out of Southeast Asia.

Clue #1: Tony's "ghost" doesn't know why Dr. Yinsen is not a possible source of the chip that Ben has.

Clue #2: Five years. There's a lot of things that happen five years before Ben comes to MegaTokyo.

D'oh!

That's what I get for posting on the fly. I should've mentioned that.

Anyway, here's my something I came up with:

#1 ends with Ben Stark's life support failing, right? Maybe #2 is part flashback, a sort of "life flashing before your eyes"-type near death experience. A way to show how Ben Stark goes from gung-ho journalist to superhero, or rather, since he had the motive to be superhero (as shown from the quote you cited), how he acquires the means to do it. He gets the opportunity in TIA #1.

Of course, I could be completely off the mark. Only Gryphon knows for sure :D

Oh it had nothing to do with the spelling. I have terrible spelling myself. The im/un transposition just always triggers that quote in my head.
