For the past 4-odd years I've enjoyed all the fics in here, especially the Undocumented Features series. But in those 4-odd years I've always wondered:

What the /hoek/ is a duster?! I know it's a term people use for female clothing, a one-piece dress, kinda like a nightgown, but material not as thin, or something. But I just can't imagine _manly_ people like Megazone and Gryphon wear something like that on public, much less in combat ... unless their original intention is to make their enemies too paralyzed laughin' their butts off to fight back. =)

But then, I'm not that good in English, unlike most people here, so sue me. ^_^

Although the images of Gryphon and Zoner in dresses would be funny...

Specific style(s) will have to be specified by the authors. I think what sets a duster apart from a regular trench are the flappy bits over the shoulders that help keep the rain off and whatnot, along with a few other touches, like the extreme length (to the ankles, I believe).

A long overcoat, not unlike a trenchcoat but generally even longer (ankle length), usually made of light-colored canvas or oilcloth and commonly equipped with leg straps and a high-split tail for horseback riding. Popularized in the late 18th century in the American West and also quite common in the Australian Outback, or so I'm told. I believe the name comes from the fact that they were intended, with their great length, to protect a rider's clothes from the dust that horseback riding in a desert kicks up.

They are common in the Outback & rural regions of Australia, but are often refered to by the maker's name: driza-bone.

The horsemen that participated in the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games were wearing them.

Ever see "The Matrix"? That long, black coat that Neo wears is a duster. I thiiink cowboys wear them sometimes as well, so if you've ever seen a Western with a guy in a coat that almost dragged the ground... That's a duster.
