Every year, Jeremy Clarkson (one of the hosts of Top Gear) does the guy-on-Top Gear equivalent of a Phil Collins solo album. These are, unsurprisingly, very like Top Gear in terms of production and presentation (I think he uses the same production team), which means that, like Top Gear, they incorporate a lot of clever use of bits from motion picture soundtracks.

This year's, Thriller, opens with a 20-second piece of something that I find myself very much wanting the rest of, but I don't know what movie it's from. This is vastly annoying. Nobody in the studio channel earlier tonight could place it either.

Here's the bit in question, clipped out of the rest of the movie and encoded with tiny video because, well, it's the audio that's important for our purposes here. If anyone here can identify this music, I would be most grateful.

In a similar vein, I saw a TV spot for Baz Luhrman's Australia a bit ago - this one, in fact - that had music in it that sounded very much like, but wasn't, a clip from Klaus Badelt's excellent score from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Now, as is the fashion with new-movie trailers and adverts, I suspect this is in fact from some other movie altogether and not from Australia at all, and - once again - I would be obliged if anybody could place it.

As for why this is in the SOS board, well, no, it's not a mistake; it's just that I'd like to use at least one of them in the bit I'm working on just now, but I can't very well do that if I haven't the slightest idea what they are.

The Thriller one sounds a LOT like an Aaron Copeland piece, but damned if I know which one.

I'm pretty sure the Australia trailer music is from Master and Commander's soundtrack.

According to one site I found, the music in the Australia trailer is one of the following:

# The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1967): "The Ecstasy of Gold" - Ennio Morricone
# Henry V (1989): "St. Crispin's Day" - Patrick Doyle
# "Take the Field" - X-Ray Dog
# Henry V (1989): "The Day is Yours" - Patrick Doyle

I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I'm pretty sure the track is something from X-Ray Dog. X-Ray Dog's music is mostly custom work done specifically for trailers, since studios got tired of using the same three clips from The Phantom in every single trailer.

The albums aren't available commercially, but you can find some of their stuff through the usual less-than-legal avenues. If you can't find that exact clip - a lot of their newer music hasn't hit the black market yet - you should find at least a half-dozen other clips with similar arrangements.

Huh. I had no idea there was such a service. That's interesting, and makes sense, but at the same time it's kind of annoying for my purposes. Not only does it make identifying and tracking down such things more difficult, it significantly reduces their usefulness as in-story cues.

I think I might be spending some duckets there. I like instrumentals and these guys know what the Fnord they are doing!

Whoo, okay, this is clearly not a website to be tackled until my DSL is back. Still, good to know; I'll make a note. I think I remember seeing the Extreme Music credit, but assumed it was just the name of the clip service they sourced the bits of rock music and whatnot from.

Yes, the initial clip is where I was referring to. X-ray dog sounds have almost all "choral" parts in it so I'm pretty sure that those aren't the pieces your looking for. The extreme music website has music that seems to have a much closer match to the original clip music. However, most of these pieces are only a min or two long as they are production music as opposed to a full score. Most likely the piece your looking for will be under directors cuts.

Now that my DSL's back, I've been able to investigate the Extreme Music site linked above and determine that this is, in fact, one of theirs. Which is good, because although such things are difficult to cite, it does at least mean that it'll stop bothering me that I don't know where it's from. :)

No joy on this one yet, but it's probably in there somewhere. I notice, amusingly, that Mr. Badelt himself is, in fact, one of Extreme Music's composers.
