#0, Symphony of the Sword: The Master List
Posted by Gryphon on Apr-02-10 at 03:26 PM
In the process of re-titling the Symphony annotations so they would index properly when that forum is sorted by subject, I had to sit down and compile a proper list of all the parts of the five Symphonies as they currently exist and the order in which they belong, and since I had the list anyway, I figured it might be of some interest.

There are currently fifty-nine Symphony stories in release, which slightly surprised me, and two in the middle of Symphony No. 3 that are planned and titled but not finished; I gave those two sequence numbers, which is why everything after Sophomore Slump appears, at first glance, to be misnumbered in the Annotations board now. (Also, while reordering the posts I discovered to my surprise that we apparently skipped annotating Out of the Blue entirely!)

The list:

S01 S1M1 Wounded Rose
S02 S1M2 Christmas Rose
S03 S1M3 A Rose for the New Year
S04 S1E1 Azalynn's Winter Holiday
S05 S1M4 Duelists of the Rose
S06 S1E2 A Question of Faith
S07 S1E3 The Courtship of Princess Dessler
S08 S1E4 Hogtown Rhapsody
S09 S1E5 Interlude at Bancroft Tower
S10 S1E6 The Rose that Blooms in the City of Light
S11 S1E7 Ohtori Academy Spring Semester Blues
S12 S1M5 Roses in Springtime
S13 S1E8 Fanfare for an Exile Prince
S14 S1M6 Hunted Rose
S15 S1M7 Reflections in Transition
S16 S1E9 Pavane for a Dead Princess
S17 S2E1 A Crown of Roses
S18 S2M1 This Old Dorm
S19 S2E2 Interlude in Zero Gravity
S20 S2E3 Interlude in the Golden City
S21 S2M2 Blue Moon Serenade
S22 S2M3 Another Christmas Rose
S23 S2E4 Interlude at the Hotel Monolith
S24 S2E5 Year's End Confrontation Blues
S25 S2E6 Tower Shrouded in Frost
S26 S2E7 Overture
S27 S2E8 Interlude at Vortigern's Lake #1
S28 S2M4 Knights 1
S29 S2M5 Knights 2
S30 S2M6 Knights 3
S31 S2M7 Ceremony & Celebration
S32 S2E9 Welcome to Your Life
S33 S3M1 Ad Astra
S34 S3M2 Per Ardua
S35 S3E1 Gunboat Diplomacy
S36 S3M3 Valiant Rose
S37 S3M4 Coming to Terms
S38 S3E2 The End of the Tour
S39 S3M5 Sophomore Slump
S40 S3E3 A Day at the Races
S41 S3M6 Christmas in Sendai

S42 S3E4 Arena
S43 S3E5 Lion of Avalon
S44 S4M1 Page of Swords
S45 S4E1 The Kindness of Strangers
S46 S4M2 A Night to Remember
S47 S4E2 Interlude on Titan (For Tomorrow)
S48 S4M3 On the Road Again
S49 S4M4 Hunter Rose
S50 S4E3 The Ceti Solution
S51 S4M5 Requiem for a Lensman
S52 S4E4 Five Bagatelles
S53 S4M6 Second Chances
S54 S4E5 In for a Penny
S55 S4M7 The Revolution Will Be Televised
S56 S4E6 Sympathy for the Devil
S57 S4E7 Interlude at Vortigern's Lake #2 (For Today)
S58 S5E1 Prelude
S59 S5M1 Ash Knight
S60 S5E2 Out of the Blue
S61 S5M2 Clarion Call

(Note that anything that wasn't a Movement got an "E" production code here, whether it was actually flagged an entr'acte, interlude, or otherwise. Also that the codes do not necessarily imply order of release, since if memory serves, some were released out of sequence, e.g. For Today came out before The Revolution Will Be Televised.)

The SOS directory on the EPU website takes up just short of 60,000 kilobytes, but that includes all the graphics, website index files, and so forth, and so does not reflect an accurate estimate of how much actual text is involved. My interest in investigating these things goes only so far. :)

And for those of us whose interest DOES go that far:

The raw text itself comes to around 8.1 megs with a total word count of 1,411,158, with Credits and Intros, as I don't have THAT much free time.
So that's what, a pair of King James Bibles give or take?

(For an Encore I'm going to do all of UF...)

That's a lot of work for a fanfic, even if it is spread out over (goes to check 'Wounded Rose') nine years... Nine years? It doesn't seem like its been that long.

The part that always depresses me slightly is the realization that its center of gravity, so to speak, is somewhere around the beginning of 2003.

Out of boredom today I d/l the KJV off of Project Gutenberg and trimmed off their
start and end blurbs. I then put it into Word and it comes out to 4.23 MB and 4,232,685 in straight ASCII. In HTML the size is around 4.4 MB.

I'm just trying to figure out how SoS with fewer words comes out to have a larger file size?

Plus the Bible is going to have all sorts of 'words' like "2", one for each verse in fact.

You think that's bad?

Imagine those of us who've been following this since Core 1.

Yeah.

There are freshthings in my local college gaming club who had not yet been born when it was released. One of them is in my Battletech campaign.

Can't say I've been following it quite that long, but I was still in my early larval stage as a freshthing myself when Core 4 was released (in something like 19 parts to rec.arts.anime(.stories?))...

Funny that Gryph should work on re-doing this. I just spent the past 18 days (trying to read slowly to savor the work) re-reading all of SOS. Just the source material, not the annotations, though -- I'm waiting for the day that I can afford a dual-screen set-up so that I can have annotations right next to the source text.

UF/FI (especially SOS) gets more re-reads than the paperback fantasy/sci-fi novels that I own... wow.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-06-10 AT 01:23 AM (EDT)

Definitely. It's a tradition of mine to pick a chunk or two of UF and re-read (or read for the first time in the case of some of the Exile or Golden Age oneshots) as much of it as I can stand each winter holiday season, in honor of the original times it kept me up all night on Christmas Eve.

I do the same thing for NXE.

Indeed, realizing that a smartphone or some similiar 'internet-in-my-hand' device would allow me to more easily read Eyrie Productions fic whenever and whereever I wanted (or whatever else I cared to) was the factor that let me to decide to start saving up for one.

Been doing the same thing for the longest time. Every time I read all the way through to the end, I go back to the start and do it again. Seems like every time I do, I notice something I didn't the first time through.

That's one of the great things about UF, there's always something new to discover. I've read through the whole saga 3-4 times now and SoS even more than that. Every time I do, I'll catch a reference I missed the first time around or I'll have been exposed to the source material since the last time I read it and a minor character, off-hand reference, or setting will suddenly jump out at me as strikingly familiar.

I'm doing exactly that right now. Just finished the first couple of movements of S4 and skipped 'ahead' to Manhunt for a change of pace. Having every UF story sitting in my pocket is really convenient.

UF does have just the right combination of good writers and an enjoyable setting to generate a high reread count.

I think Core 4 was one of the first stories posted to r.a.a.creative at the time, as it was new and the entire rec.arts.anime.* hierarchy had been only recently created from the original newsgroup.

My recollection is that r.a.a.c. didn't appear until my sophomore year, and a bit of Googling provided me with some limited results on crossroads. Not sure if chapter 1 (or the general announcement, for that matter) was posted the same day or the day before, but the headers (if not the body) of chapter 2 are in Google Groups' cache as being posted to rec.arts.anime on 2/27/93. Which sounds about right to me - I'd only really found usenet back in November or so, and was heavily back into Robotech, having rediscovered it through a friend of a friend...

Yes, I was first Introduced to EPU and the Core UF, somewhere around News Years of 94 on my old Mac LC40. The addiction started then, when the text was provided to me on a 3.5 floppy.....

So yes Offsides, your date range is about right.

I've been trying not to think too much about it. But, hey, there were days I thought I'd never be this old. All my planning pre-college fizzled out around 25 or so.

On the other hand, the nephew is 5 and that's about the right time to introduce him to super heroes other than Harry Potter. I'm trying to figure out how to introduce him to anime without freaking out his mom. My sister never met an animated character she didn't like...

I haven't gone through and re-linked everything that's in the various index files, the Chron listing, etc., but I did copy all the extant SOS text files into a subdirectory and rename them in accordance with the Master List, so that they ls in proper series order:

http://www.eyrie-productions.com/UF/FI/SOS/TXT/

This directory's contents should be suitable for trucking around on mobile devices etc. without having to keep a concordance handy to remind you that, e.g., Pavane for a Dead Princess comes after Reflections in Transition.

That naming scheme's going to be annoying to maintain (or else will get ugly) if you backfill stories into the middle of it, though.

Moderately, yeah. I'd have to go with alpha discriminators - for instance, if I added a third side story to the Great Summer Road Trip of 2405, between Interlude in the Golden City and Blue Moon Serenade, it'd end up being something like "s20a-s2e3a-theassassinationofjessejamesbythecowardrobertford.txt". That wouldn't be particularly pretty to a human reader, but apache would still sort it correctly, which was the whole point of the mass rename.

Given that the alternative was BASIC-style line numbers, it seemed the best compromise.

Would a s20a-s2e3a.1 or s20a-s2e3a.2 work in that instance?
