#0, Rebuild of NXE (still not really)

Hey, while everyone's waiting for Exodus 5 to kick off (which should hopefully be happening Real Soon Now), I thought some of you might enjoy a slightly slicker presentation on your NXE the Motion Picture re-reading experience, so I went ahead and remastered it for the Eyrie CSS. No new material, just shinier (with a few bugfixes).

Edited 2016/03/06 to note: I've done the same thing to the episode of Exodus 1; 2 and 3 to follow as time and energy permit. Also some revisions to the NXE top index page, to reflect the fact that the series did not, against all our own expectations, end forever with the movie.

Yeah verily.

Nothing like software or web pages built be 25 year olds with perfect eyesight. Small font, low contrast...or vibrating colours!

Goddamn but I'd forgotten how much fun a ride that was. I was, um, supposed to be working this morning.

I noticed one bug that remained unsquashed. In the interest of not spoiling anything in case someone hasn't read this yet (what's wrong with you? Go read it!), do a search for "b>" and you'll find it. It's the only example of its kind in the text.

If it's the one you mean (it's not far from a use of the word "imprecation"), I fixed it earlier this afternoon.

Hah! So you did. I should have refreshed the page again before posting.

In my defense, at the time I spotted it I didn't care, I just wanted to finish the story. It was only after that I said "Waitaminute, there was a typo back there, wasn't there?"

Probably not the only one, in a document of that size. :)

If I had broken a closing tag, I'd have noticed it immediately, but an opening doesn't mess up the whole rest of the document in an obvious way.

You know, if that were to happen on, say, Thursday the 25th, I wouldn't turn it down.

I've always wondered about what the line "She's going for no splash!" is a reference to...

Lime2K
The One True Evil Overlord
probably some sort of SportsBallâ„¢ reference...

I don't remember the precise context now, whether it was a This Is SportsCenter ad or just what, but it's a reference to a joke Truss and I saw on TV one time, featuring a mashup of platform diving (in which one of the scoring criteria is how small a splash the competitor makes) and sumo wrestling.

"He's going for no splash..."

"In his dreams, Bob!"

It was from a series of commercials for Bud Light, riffing off their tag line "Two great tastes that taste great together." Two TV viewers argue over what sport they want to watch, and then one slams a bottle of Bud Light down on the TV, combining the two into one. The ones I remember were the aforementioned Sumo High Dive, Full-Contact Golf (Golf and Football), and - my personal favorite - the Weiner Dog Winternationals (a Dog Show and Drag Racing, which begs the question... where does the parachute come from?).

Ebony the Black Dragon

"Life is like an anole. Sometimes it's green. Sometimes it's brown. But it's always a small Caribbean lizard."

And that was enough to find the commercial in question on youtube:

Lime2K
The One True Evil Overlord
it's actually Miller Lite, not Bud Light; but as they're both basically flavored water I can understand the mixup

On a point of order, this is actually the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups slogan, not Miller Lite's equally venerable "tastes great vs. less filling" pitch.

Full series conversion is now done and linked on the revised index. Note that this is only the main series episodes. I may get around to doing Exodus 3:0 and Bonus Theater!! at some later point, but as they would involve hellaciously more complicated markup in a lot of cases, it's not exactly at the top of my to-do list.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have made one substantive change to one episode, beyond the usual small corrections and typo repairs. In the original version of Asuka and DJ's conversation in Exodus 3:6, the coffee they're drinking sort of mysteriously disappears before they start doing things that would spill it if they still had it. This causal discrepancy has now been addressed. (Also, DJ bothers to attribute his Hemingway quotation, which for some reason I always thought was already in there but wasn't; maybe I was thinking of the time that same passage was quoted in Symphony of the Sword all this time.)

Enjoy!

Cool. I just finished my re-read of Exodus 1 last night, so the timing is perfect :)

And while the Bonus Theater stuff might be nice, I totally understand not wanting that headache. Just put a link to Rei Ayanami's Great Big World of Bonus Theater!! on the NXE page and leave it at that.
