So anyway, Peter Eng said,

Fun fact: Jet Alone is a reference to the original creation that became Jet Jaguar. Before someone at Toho decided to make it a Godzilla movie, the film that became 1976's Godzilla vs. Megalon was planned as a tokusatsu film, the design of the star of which was to be decided by a fan competition. The winning entry was submitted by an elementary school student, who envisioned a robot hero called Red Alone.

Somewhere along the development process, the Red Alone movie became the latest in the Godzilla series, and Red Alone himself was relegated to the big boss's grinning sidekick, Jet Jaguar. 20ish years later, when the Gainax gang were looking for a Sad Robot for that one episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion, someone thought of that little bit of Japanese cinema history, and Jet Alone (with his distinctive red markings) was born.

I was wondering about that when I posted, but I didn't feel like doing the research.
