I just designed a new character. She was meant to do nothing more than show up and direct someone else to a meeting, and before they got there she had a detailed description and the beginnings of an at least partially fledged backstory.

The first time this happened in a Symphony story, it was Rina Dragonaar in The Courtship of Princess Dessler. And that ended pretty well, so I'm rather pleased.

Actually, come to think of it, that's happened two or three times so far in the development of this movement, albeit not with quite the full Rina "OK, I'm here, now where's my trailer?" intensity in the other cases. :)

Well, with Rina, it's understandable....she doesn't strike me as a character who quietly waits from the authors to realize what a find they are. SHe kind of stands up, pulls her sword/blaster out and shouts, "All right, I'm here, anyone want to complain about it?" ;)

It's funny you should mention this. I was thinking about it recently, at the end of Try when Maevis Copperwing appears on the odds board. I knew right away who she had to be--only one copper dragon has appeared in UF AFAIK--and I thought naming her meant you had belatedly had a place for her somewhere.

She's not the character I mean in this case, but I believe we will be seeing Maevis again at some point, yes.

Well, yeah; you did say this was a new character, and Maevis is anything but. I was just inordinately amused at how often the creative muse grabs hold. It does for me too, I just end up using it to create tabletop characters I will never play. =)

My characters do that to me as well. The last time it happened, she brought a small horde of sisters, brothers and cousins along for the ride, and I don't think they've all poppped out of the woodwork yet.

This doesn't just happen to writers. While recording the voice work for the Detective Conan (aka Case Closed) anime, the VA for Inspector Megure went "You there, what's your name?" and fellow VA Wataru Takagi adlibbed "It's Takagi, sir!". Officer Wataru Takagi ended up making his way back to the ongoing manga series, and getting several character arcs including a successful romance.
