#0, UPDATE: Annotated Editions
Posted by Gryphon on Dec-13-06 at 12:10 PM
OK, we think we - and by "we" I mean Truss - have the code for the annotated editions (as opposed to just big lists of annotations you have to find the numbered lines for yourself) just about working, so here's what I'm a-gonna do.

For the moment, I'm going to keep posting the lists of notes here; if nothing else, I can always hope they'll generate some discussion. (Not that all the annotations I've posted have. C'mon, nobody has anything to say about Pavane for a Dead Princess or S2M3? Sheesh. :) Once I've posted all the annotations through the end of the Second Symphony, I'll make the annotated editions of the first two Symphonies available on the main site. After that, we'll see whether I keep cluttering up the boards with the annotations or just go straight to putting them on the site.

Yep, the code is mostly as it needs to be. I have a few more tweaks in mind, but nothing that'll require big changes, or prevent the annotations from going live if I don't get around to implementing the improvements in time.

Big thanks to forum user cc for the javascript code that, while heavily modified and expanded over the last few days, is still very much at the core of what's in use. A big time-saver, that was.

Hey, I just barely finished A Question of Faith so far, and haven't really had much to add to what a lot of people have managed to already post (since I know you frown on AOL Me Too! posts)... Give it time - I'm just enjoying knowing a bit more about what was going on in your head when you wrote these. Thanks for giving us more Symphony, even if it's not in the usual manner this time around :)

Sorry Dude, it's finals...

but when I'm working on my new lab project next week, I'll have plenty of time to cruise and comment. They're a lot of fun. Thanks!

What evil genius thought of putting final exams for fall semester right when most sensible people are preparing for Christmas?

Ayup. Or the joy of putting nose to grindstone to bang out as much for Suitland as possible before the end of the fourth quarter.

(And the joys of living in a house with people trying to do both... >_<)

And for those of us who make our living in retail-land, it's giftmas time. Meaning that we're at work 12-15 hours a day, daily. We're lucky to have time to eat, let alone read fun stuff.

Eh, that's OK. Give me a week or two, and I might even find time to get around to adding my annotations. :)

Cool, annotated editions. :D Much more helpful. I can only guess so much from the commentary itself (some being more obvious in rough location than others), and having found that MS Word is incapable of doing a line count without ruining it with page counts and resetting, and that my more favoured WordPad and Notepad just don't count at all (downside to simplicity, I guess), it's a whole lot easier to read the notations in the right place rather than have to keep guessing and/or counting. Much appreciated.

Comments -on- them, by and large, will have to wait 'til I can manage to get enough time to read 'em through. Still, on a general note, it is certainly nice to see things with the editorial views on, and know a little more about what was planned, what was more spur-of-the-moment, and where plans just went horribly awry. ;)

Standard Windows tools don't do basic, useful things; film at 11.

Here's the editor I'll be recommending every time this comes up:

PSPad. It's freeware (and it's good for coding, too).

Load up the .txt file, click "View > Line Numbers" in the menu, and you're set.

Glad I mentioned it now. That's a rather nice little editor. Definately a step up from "Overblown yet not nessecerily functional". Thanks!

What are you *doing* if Word's messing up a simple line count? It's part of the Page Setup options, just select all before you go there, and make sure the line count is continuous (I think you have to be in the page layout view too, but not certain of that)

Doing? Mostly, not finding options nestled quite that far in on a program I tend to never use.
Guess there is a line-count option. A nasty, makes it horrible to read line-count option that has to be activated with every document, but a line-count option nontheless.

I'll skip that, thanks.
