<Philip-M> saw this, thought of you - http://magnetic-terp-input.tumblr.com/post/96024401030/xrayandmav-been-watching-a-lot-of-k-on-recently
<Z-Gryphon> heh, cute. that's a moment from the first season opening credits. :)
<Z-Gryphon> meanwhile, I'm watching Arpeggio of Blue Steel and trying to keep the streams from crossing. this is not very difficult, actually, since they would go together about as well as an Italian-sausage-and-whipped-cream pizza.
<Z-Gryphon> :)
<Philip-M> heh.
<Z-Gryphon> (actually, I say K-On and Arpeggio wouldn't work together; they kind of would, but only in an import scenario where I abandoned the K-On premise and just used the character designs, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun in a UF context. :)
<Z-Gryphon> On the other hand, a small task force of Fleet of Fog ships who would rather just form a band is perfectly in keeping with the wackier end of Arpeggio's bizarrely wide srs-bsns-to-comedy continuum. :)

IIRC, the anime tones that down a bit. Manga goes from Takao literally fighting to the death to Yamato sticking a headband on her that forces her to obey orders again...

...by forcing her hair into such humiliating styles that she can't face the thought of Her Captain seeing her in an afro.

And also Ashigara, who is utterly endearing despite making Maya look clever and thoughtful.

It's just as well, because it's a bit nerve-racking as it is. You never can quite be certain whether they're about to reach for the slapstick or the feels, as the young persons say nowadays.

I can see that, yeah.

...Although on second thought, it may just be the Manga biasing less-serious than the Anime does. In retrospect, there are a couple of moments in the anime that are jaw-droppingly effective in large part because the manga never went there. One of them gets retconned, sorta, but the other... doesn't, and has repercussions that basically cause the show's ending.

That, and I'm probably still automatic-flinch-level sore from other recent bad experiences. I totally expected either Haruna or Makie to die in "Friend".

AFAICR, there are no Major Named Character Deaths in the manga, and only three in the anime. Two of those, I found personally satisfying, and the third was... well, it was a punch in the gut, but it was a brilliantly executed punch in the gut.

And knowing that the manga hasn't killed them makes it easier to take.

Hmm. I'm not getting the same count you are, unless you're counting the one who never actually existed as a death.

Also, wow, you weren't kidding about the last five minutes being the last 14 episodes.

I think it counts in the sense that "a character was here, and now she is not". It also made your comment in the episode 5 thread about her not being all there somewhat . . . is there a word for "that's funny and wince-worthy at the same time"?

>Also, wow, you weren't kidding about the last five minutes being the

I think they're overcompensating, or something, for the pacing of the manga. For comparison, the repair and refit at Iwo Jima, with Hyuuga, happens around chapter 30. The most recent chapter is 57, and they're just now getting ready to try and breach Kongou's blockade line.

Well... sort of, in a meta kind of way, I guess. It's sort of an extreme form of the "undercover villain heel turn", except that instead of turning out to be a bad guy who was just pretending to be one of your favorite characters,1 Maya turned out not to be a character at all. Kongō seems to have taken it personally, though, so I'm certainly not saying it was ineffective. (I do kind of wonder how the Evil Sub Sibs managed to make her so wacky when they themselves lacked even the most rudimentary understanding of wackiness. Same way Tesla managed to program Atomic Robo to know what an attractive woman looks like, I suppose.)

Also, I have to say, the production team did such a good job of making Kongō unlikeable that her face turn at the end kind of fell down for me. Most of the others who turned, I was rooting for (in particular Haruna, who is pretty much my favorite on the show), but when she did I was just kind of, "Eh, another mouth to feed." :)

>It also made your comment in the episode 5 thread about her

Heh, yeah. Whereas when they did that reveal, my immediate thought was, "Oh, that's why she acts like one of the insane elevators from whichever Hitchhiker's book that was." :)

1 The Legend of Korra people actually had this planned for Asami Sato. I know, right? The one thing they did right in Book 1 (apart from "design the protagonist"), and they originally intended to do it as wrong as possible. What is the matter with you people? Fuckin' RISD grads, man, I don't know.

It's mostly a porting artifact from the manga, and also everybody did sort of musical chairs; Maya was as thoroughly insane, but it was mainly from being stuck on picket duty in the back end of nowhere and being extremely bored and, frighteningly, Kongou was less sympathetic in the manga, where her personality pretty much began and ended at "I'm angry." The Sub Sibs were originally a lot more like Iona, and possibly playing both sides at once; but that ties into the "Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film" B-plot (that plot also implies that Iona *is* the Admiralty Code, which gets even weirder).

I did like that they looked just like her. That was a nice touch. Knowing what I know about the fates of the real I-400 through I-402 (they were WWII Japanese subs, so you know it doesn't end well), I figured they weren't likely to get happy endings.

Heh, having now read the first volume, I am amused to note that that version of Kongō also appears to be lazy, which is not necessarily an attribute I would expect of a fast battleship. :)

Well, RISD's hockey team is called the Nads, primarily so the students and fans can chant "GO NADS!" at games. And their mascot is Scrotie (link not exactly SFW). Their outlook may not be precisely orthogonal to one's typical expectations of television writers.

Take that as you will.

Yes, well, I figured I had pretty much covered that with, "Fuckin' RISD grads, man, I don't know."

Also not entirely accurate, since at this point in my life I do pretty much typically expect television writers to fuck it up all the time. Just not in ways that are quite as personally repugnant to me as DiMartino and Konietzko seem to be optimized for lately.

I was counting her as 'dead', yeah, because there really wasn't any elegant way of describing what was really going on without going into spoilers.

I quite liked Kongou, myself, which doubtless helped. After all, all she wanted was to serve the Admiralty Code as best she could, and they go and do i]that to her.

Why can I see something like the following?
Truss- "Tell me again how we managed to get such a good deal on a T-class bodyguard droid?"
Maya- "Carnival da yo!"
Truss- "Oh. Right."
Jung- "At least she fits in?"

It's probably a good thing that nothing like the Fleet of Fog existed in UF's Golden Age. If it did, there would be a massive firefight, followed by distribution of "So You're Not The Master Race," and the integration of some of the Fleet of Fog into the WDF.

And they would form a band.

I'm assuming there wasn't a fleet, anyhow. From the sounds of it, one or two of these would be an unpleasant surprise for the SDF-17. They're sort of used to having the Biggest Gun In The Universe for most of the Golden Age, so having something show up that can stand up to the Wayward Son would be a bit of a shock.
