Street Fighter Tournament Combatant Profile

"Gryphon"

error: server wcmatphoto not responding, still trying

Name: Benjamin Hutchins
Nationality: USA
Sex: M
DOB: June 20, 19XX
Age: 25
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 300 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Brown
Ethnicity: Anglo-Euro
Fighting Style: Icon of Stone Ler Drit

Ranking: World Warrior
W/L/D: 71/4/0 [5/2/0]
World Warrior victory average: .714
KO: 56
Streak: W 3
Last Opponent: EL FUERTE; Nov. 5, Mexico City (W)

Scouting Report: An American fighter with a compact, economical style that contains little wasted movement. Not the most flamboyant warrior, but steady and relentless; possesses evident supernatural ki abilities. His record as a World Warrior so far is only .500, but his victory against Sergei Zangief earlier this year, his first at that ranking, was a spectacular display of grit and determination accomplished under circumstances peculiar even by World Warrior standards. Has also defeated Ryu Hoshi, the current Street Fighter Tournament champion, twice in his career (once in his second World Warrior win).

Interestingly, this World Warrior appears to use a variant of the same obscure Thai-derived fighting style as Mrigankan dictator and occasional Street Fighter Tournament sponsor M. Bison, although it is not believed that they know each other personally and he has no known connection to Thailand.

A likeable fighter with no known enemies on the circuit, Gryphon is well-known for the hospitality he shows challengers who visit his home in Worcester, Massachusetts, which has been nicknamed "the St. Spyridon Home for Wayward Fight Girls" after both his student, Sakura Kasugano, and fellow World Warrior Cammy White relocated there in recent months. Kasugano achieved World Warrior standing in her own right with a victory over El Fuego on Nov. 5.

A few of the better-known moves in his arsenal are:

Electro Gauntlet: Channels ki into an electricity-like energy, usually focused in the hands and discharged into the opponent with a punch.

Sliding Kick: Levitating medium-range charging attack.

Spinning Backfist: Combination dodge/attack. Can be combined with the Electro Gauntlet technique.

360 Double Kick: Just what it says on the tin, a chain of two powerful 180° kicks.

The Maltese Falcon: Rarely used wallspring/diving punch; aerial counter.

Tesla Bolt: Ranged shot of electric ki. Can jump from one opponent to another if they're bunched up closely enough; known as Chain Lightning in this role. (Formerly called Psycho Lightning.)

Electroconvulsive Therapy: Full-body Electro Gauntlet discharge. Useful for breaking grappling holds.

Combo: The Stark Fist of Removal: High-speed multiple punch, finished with an Electro Gauntlet uppercut. Devastating but very demanding.

Combo: Murder on the Orient Express: Complicated triple punch/double kick/throw/final punch combination. Very potent, but circumstances rarely favor its use.

This fighter is one of two World Warriors scheduled to compete in the Kokuryűkai Kumite tournament, Nov. 25-27, in Hong Kong.

Oh, quick question. If Gryphon were put into a video game, would his special moves involve quarter-circles and dragon-punch motions, or charging down or back?

Probably some of both, just to be perverse.

Well, at least he doesn't have those devilish full circle throws that I can never manage except by accident, or purposeful button-mashing.

"Murder on the Orient Express" is presumably one of those absurd button-stabber combos, the kind you occasionally do by mistake and then stand there watching the win animation and wondering, "How the hell did I do that?" Like that thing Akuma does that's so horrible the game won't even show you what's in it.

A friend of mine taught me that combo, and then we spent a full two hours working on it until I could actually use it to some effect in real play. It was fun to watch people's reactions to being steamrolled by it, but I was never really good enough at setting it up. By design I'm sure, but it's rather...obvious.

Rather obvious is right but its so very user friendly in comparison to Akuma's UFO of doom ultra :(

Shun Goku Satsu, which I recall reading somewhere meant, literally, "Instant Hell Murder", which, taken as such, is probably the most awesome and badass name for an attack in a fighting game, ever.

"Murder On The Orient Express" is cool, though. It's got culture. Shun Goku Satsu hasn't got that (it's just got the murder and the hell).

Yay! This should really go up on the WL page.

Also, can you explain to us now why it's called "Warrior's Legacy"? And if that's still a relevant motivator of the story line?

Down at the bottom below the story listing, you think? I'd have to be nice and not immediately update it after a new episode comes out... and figure out how to translate the DCF code into proper HTML, but that shouldn't be hard. I wish I knew why DCF insisted on all that leading whitespace, though. It's nowhere in the source post.

It should probably be "Warriors' Legacy" by the time it's all said and done, but basically, the warrior in question is Rose, and her legacy is what she's passed on to G (and he is now passing on to Sakura), and the hope it represents that the world may be rid of the threat of M. Bison one day.

(It could be argued that Bison himself represents a legacy of hers as well, albeit not one she's in any way pleased about.)

No pressure, G! :)

Check your mail, Chief. I figured it out and mailed it to you.

(If you didn't get it, email me with your current best email and I'll re-send it. even figured out the whitespace issue!)

Thanks for the confirmation. And yeah, I was thinking bottom of the page, but it's so unlike the other bottom of the page stuff (mostly graphics) that I wasn't sure quite where.

And yeah, what a legacy. He's ridiculously chill for a guy in a martial arts vengeance flick.

>martial arts vengeance flick.

Well, he's not sure about cold, but he does believe revenge is a dish that is best served methodically, and like Paul Masson, he will sell no wine before its time. I mean, look at what happened to Ryu when he went after that guy what killed his sensei before he'd unlocked all his supermoves. :)

More seriously: As was mentioned obliquely in an early episode, he and Rose actually had a significant falling-out over the whole idea that he was being cultivated as an anti-Bison weapon once. He seems to be down with it in "The Contract", but at some point toward the end of high school he decided that was a truly daft lifepath to be on and essentially bagged the whole thing to go to college instead, and he and Rose didn't speak for several years.

While in college he met Zoner, and they ended up starting Trailing Edge Air Lines. There came a point early in TE's history when something we have not yet seen rather woke him up to the reality of what a world without, at the very least, some check on Bison's ambitions would be like. At that point he sort of got back to work, as it were - but he very deliberately works not to get obsessive about it. It could be argued that he's a bit in denial about it, but he would prefer to think he's taking a Zen approach. One thing he's picked up from some of his colleagues over the years, and that Rose has never been as good at as you would really hope for in a sensei, is that you have to let these moments arrive when they're ready, then exist in them.

It probably helps too that it's readily apparent that he's not at all alone in wanting to take down Bison. There's probably a feeling of destiny or somesuch, but usually in the vengeance flicks, it's all riding on the um... vengeance-er.

Ack! I got caught out by the fake blue hyperlinking for El Fuego and Sakura. :S

Still nice work on the fight card :D Also, Nellis AFB for Guile's fight? Is that a Fallout reference?

Not really; it's just the nearest base to the one where Guile's currently posted (Groom Lake) that would actually have an open house, since the public is never permitted within several miles of Area 51.

The (fictional) house is located across Cedar Street from St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral (in real life there's a parking lot there). What with Sakura, and Cammy, and Sakura's friends, and all, it seemed apropos. :)
