To try and give poor neglected UF the attention it deserves, what is everybodies favorite UF story?

Mine is Split Infinative, although the Quagmire Project comes in with honorable mention.

Cybertron Dreams is up there for me, mainly because it makes so much more sense than the complete mess the actual TF universe eventually crumbled into. To their credit, of course, the main goal had more to do with selling toys than concise and creative story and plot. ;)

Soundwave was always one of my favorite characters anyway, and I always had an inkling he was more misunderstood than indifferent.

Rite of Passage is up there as well, if only for Gryph's ED-209, who steals the show.

And when I get bored and go in to re-read stuff, I usually wind up in Doc's thread too--having little experiance with anime (most of what I know comes from EPU and the exploration I've done from titles related to here) I tend to get a bigger kick out of the stuff based on other sci-fi and such. Which is probably why I'm on the side of enjoying D.J.'s character in NXE, but that's a topic for another bloated thread elsewhere. ;)

Hmmm.

As far as my favorite, hands down... probably most of the Redneck stuff. I am a big fan of his version of Washuu, as well as his take on the Jedi. And hell, it has the Goldfish Warning. How can you beat that?

although, yes, when I got out of the hospital recently and wasn't supposed to be reading, the concert scene in Core 4 got a lot of my attention... as much of it as I could see/ read without pain, at least. ditto large parts of NXE's third chapter. (and yeah, I'm mostly fine now, except for an outbreak of 24-point bold fonts to enable me to actually read what I'm typing.)

Sounds like my own universe. It doesn't help that I'm trying to stay away from Eyrie-style fanfic and just to original creations. *sigh* It'd help if it didn't suddenly rise up and demand to be run partially as an IRC-based roleplaying campaign.

What? I get to answer this one too...

Of my own UF works, I have more that I find winceworthy than pleasurable at this point; but I won't be tacky enough to pick one of the ones I do still like as my overall favorite, anyway. As far as the UF story that's pleased me the most in any single incident, that would have to go to the first installment of "Hammer Time". It was the first non-WPI-written UF segment, and not only was I pleasantly surprised to receive it in the first place, I was blown away by Marty Rose's sense of humor and command of the language. He still turns phrases that make me a little green, though, like all of us, he's slowed down output-wise since those halcyon days.

Yeah, Hammer Time 1 is definitely way high up on the list of cool UF stories. It's funny, has cool tech/transformers, and uses Darkwing Duck. :) Out of the more core stories, A New Beginning (FI) is pretty darn cool, just out of pure triumphant return type stuff. Makes me feel warm and happy, after the darkness of Exile.

Hmmm. For me, it's a tossup between "Ronin" and the concert scene from UF4. Both were truly inspired, and I find myself going back to each, albeit for different reasons. Whose idea was that concert anyway?

I don't remember who actually thought of it - it was probably one of the many things that came out of the creative session Zoner, ReRob and I had on the Alden Hall loading dock one summer night in 1992 - but ReRob was the one who actually wrote it.

UF core, part one. Best use of satire, and not a lot of copying from anime series. Speaking of which, who has ever read Otaku Rising? That was a boring rip off if I ever saw one.

You know, I don't think I ever read it. It came along during that weird period when I wasn't actually online, so the first I ever heard of it was later on, when somebody asked me why it was part of UF and I answered, rather confusedly, that it wasn't. Zoner, do you remember the details of that little contretemps? As I recall it got rather nasty for a while there...

Only vaguely. I was running the USENet Anime FanFic FTP archine at the time, I think it might have been before RAAS got started...

A bunch of UF fans from another college wrote UF1 again, only with their group of friends and a flying UPS truck instead of my Daytona. (If we did it today I guess it'd be my PT Cruiser, somehow "PT Cruiser from Hell" just doesn't have the same ring...) At some point in the story they witness some of the events shown in UF, somewhat establishing that it is in the same universe...

Yes, there are many differences, but the basic plot is pretty much the same.

I contributed to the troubles inadvertently when, for want of better organization, I tossed it in the archive in the same place as UF. At the time I hadn't setup a clear structure, and UF was still embryonic, and I didn't think it was a big deal. I'd also done it with some other tangentially related, but non-canon, things.

Later when we started growing UF I reorganized things and clearly renamed it and kept it out of the UF subdir, indicating it was NOT part of the UF canon. I think it was one of the OR authors who didn't take well to it. But, frankly, I never paid it that much mind.

It is probably still in the RAAC archines, so if you want to scan it...

BTW, maybe we should raise the 'hot thread' threshhold... 25 or so?

Just read it for the first time last week, actually. And I think I have to agree with most everyone. Derivative, not really in an "evil" way but more in a "that was cool, let's put on a show *just* like that, only imcompetently" way. And sadly, far too much thrown in that was "cool" and far too little that was plot. More things coming unexpectedly out of left field than in an early Twister fic, too. It wasn't quite fun enough to justify reading the whole thing like I did; I think I completed it more out of the kind of compulsive fascination that makes people stare at auto wrecks and "Plan 9 from Outer Space".

It's been a while since I read it, but I think you hit it right on the mark. I read it right after first finishing UF, and it just didn't seem as fresh, or as well written, or something. And the plot was boring. "Uh, gee. We found this nifty thing that lets us create powerful anime-based technology. Now the bad guys come after us. Now we beat up the bad guys. Now we sit around and look cool. Now the bad guys bosses come after us. Now we beat them up, too. Now the bosses of the bosses come after us..." etc, ect. Too repetitive.

I haven't played it either. All I know about it is hearsay, but every intelligent person who's reviewed it has given it two thumbs down. Plus the descriptions of the gameplay are painful enough to make it not worth my time to find that out first-hand.

BUTBUTBUT if you like RPGs, the best one I've played so far has been Final Fantasy 9, which is perfect in every way, but sadly undermarketed unlike its two predecessors. I'm almost, almost inspired to write a fanfic about it...but no. Too lazy.

I am ridiculously obsessed with that series. I have played every FF except 8 and Tactics, and I have to say that each one has been better than the last. But if you're short on cash and have an SNES emulator, Chrono Trigger is the way to go. It's the game that got me hooked on RPGs, which I have been playing nonstop since last summer.

And yes, whoever invented emulation is my hero forever!

Oh, the benefits of having relatives with similar interests and well-paying jobs. The lack of anime at Blockbuster certainly doesn't help, though.

I really enjoyed Tactics. The gameplay can be incredibly annoying, and you can really mess yourself up by becoming too powerful, but the story was really fun, and the art style was spiffy. On the other hand, I skipped 8 as well. It looked too much like 7 which didn't impress me all that much.

Core #1!!!!

That is my all-time favorite! Although Gryphon's hisory of Cybertron was the first UF/EPU story I read, Core #1 was the first I read realizing what I was reading -- don't ask me to explain that. Anyway...

I started Core #1 late one Friday night (9-10, late being when the family started to go to bed) and stayed up until 6 or so the next morning. It took me a week to plow through the rest of the week (remind me to tell the short, short tale of when and where I finished #4 sometime), but what a magical week it was.

Still, Core #1 still remains me favorite. It, imo, grasps the greatness of the Wedge Rats, University Wackiness, computer geekdom, anime/otaku fun, The Dirty Pair, a touch of CyberPunk, and that Douglas Adams feel like no other fiction ever written. That's NOT to say that the others lack, mind you. Each Core and UF story is marvelous and increases the wonder of the universe, but there is just some spark of magic that comes from starting out. Maybe it's the sheer excitement of taking the first step into an adventure, opening the editor to write a program, flipping your PSX on for the very first time. Whatever it is, though, it's something that is very special and it keeps me coming back for more!

It's so hard. PCHammer has some really good ideas and writing, Mr. Mann has some good ideas and thinks a lot like me, but I have to go with my favorite character - Gryphon. Whether in the Golden Age or far in the future, his style of being a hero without seeming to be a heroic person makes him very believable... and I think the others just kind of nodded their heads and followed suit in their writing.

Favorite _single_story_? Oh, that's just too mean. I don't know. One with Vaughn in it.

You expect people to choose? That's cruel ;-)

For me, it'd probably be a tie between UF1 <wackiness at its best, and I wish my college had half the personality WPI seems to in that story> and Rite of Passage <It ties up loose ends in the core, has some great scenes, leaves you with a 'warm fuzzy' when you're done, and cures cancer!{ok ok, maybe that went to far, but anyway}>

Well, I'll go with Gryphon's comments on this. There are some that I do find winceworthy, as he put it, though certainly not more of those than the good ones! As for a specific...yeah. Rite of Passage. The IBC sold me. Forget Snapple, -that- stuff is the best stuff on earth. It was a little combat heavy for the typical sneak-in-and-get-the-goods Shadowrun-esque story, but hey, no run ever survives first contact with the enemy. That's what happens when things go bad. After having seen the Judge Dredd movie again, I could wish to see Leeanna or Ichi again...but if all the work nowadays is in FI, they're both long gone. Oh, well.

Hmm, I could be wrong here, but Feeple is still around in FI, hence he must be detian , and I doubt severly he'd let Ichi wither up without him, so she is likely immortal as well. As for Leanna, I dunno, no life span has been set for Zardons, so they could be just as long lived as Salusians.

well, beside being the most obvious and generally simplest option, I suppose there are other possibilities <AFAIK, there have been 3 life extension methods mentioned in UF: Omega 2, RETRO, and whatever Washu did to Redneck. Could be others of course, but one must form a theory based on existing facts and evidence> In any case, I'd guess Ichi would still be around, since Asrial was fond of her as well, and Feeple would probably have a fit if Asrial didn't help her too.

Maybe, if any of us thinks of a good way to play it that holds water with the others (and especially Gryph and Zoner).

For now, this is how things sit in the UF universe regarding the 'Salu Four.'

Queen Asrial Arconian, Ambassador and First Consort Jeremy Feeple, Ichikun, head Clan Ichinohei, and General Princess Leeanna Zard'al are all alive and healthy as of 2412.

As strongly implied by descriptions and activities in the various stories these four appear in (UF1, UF4, Quagmire Project, Passion, Die Hardly, Cybertron Dreams) none of these four have aged at -all- since attaining their majority.

They have NOT been prolonged in any way. (As of 2412, Leeanna is between 30% and 40% cyborged, but this is due to injury and loss of limbs, not aging.) Of the four, Leeanna ought to have the shortest lifespan (living on a world with very poor nutrition sources and a high background radiation level) and Asrial the longest (a Salusian can live close to a millenia with careful medical care, of which about 600 years may be considered 'active'), but to all outside appearances they look of an age, to within one or two years or year-equivalents. Even Asrial, who should be well into middle-age by her race's standards, is still in the bloom of youth.

They do not undergo regen treatments save for injuries- certainly nothing on the scale of the RETRO procedure. They are not mutants, nor are they Highlander immortals. They do not possess Great Rings of Power.

The four have kept any thoughts or theories they might have on the subject to themselves. Any persons expert enough to know the cause of their perpetual youth are -not talking.- In short, it is one of the UF universe's great mysteries.

The most popular theory among gossips in the UF universe is that the four will begin to age when Asrial gives birth to an heir. Of course, being the most popular theory, it is guaranteed to be utterly false. }:-{D

Any further revealations on the subject will, no doubt, be the subject of a story in itself, once Edison or Washuu or someone tells US what the secret is.

I think we might really want to ask Skuld and/or Teleute about this one. My guess is that the Four are just plain *needed* in some way that will not permit them to die until that duty is discharged...

which doesn't necessary involve such temporal concerns as a heir for the Arconian dynasty.

Good to see you finally made here, Redneck. :)

I should still think that it is possible that they have all received Omega 2. Since Queen (then Princess) Asrial was a junior officer on board the Wayward Son back in the early days of the Golden Age, she would have had access to Edison Bell and his supply of Omega 2. And since everybody and their brother was taking it (with the only known exceptions being Vaughn, Redneck, and PCHammer), and we know that it can work on non-humans, there is no reason that she wouldn't have taken it. After all, there is a difference between being incredibly long-lived and being immortal. And once infected, I seem to recall that it is possible to give it to other people (was it Secrets that this happened in?).

Plausible? Maybe. Is it what happened? Probably not.

Omega-2 isn't communicable like a disease - once its work is done, it disappears from the system. It's supposed to be impossible to reverse-engineer from the changes it's wrought in the subject's genetic code, too.

Where the 02 came from that's mentioned in Secrets (which, by the way, is one of those stories that makes me wince and wish I could erase everybody's memory :) is a story that hasn't been told yet, but it's a lot more complicated than simple transmission.

See, I had thought he had some old hair or some such to compare to his new genetic structure <I'm oversimplifying a wee bit, but with sufficient understanding of just what genetic sequences do what things, gentic engineering actually seems kinda easy. {hey, I'm a coder, I figure once you understand the code, it becomes much easier to write your own, but my knowledge of biology isn't as extensive as it'd need to be to really know how far off I might be}>

Uh...ooooookaaaaaay...

As for me, I don't see how Ichi would have been given Omega-2. That's reserved for exemplary service in the WDF, and since when did Ichi join them? She's a human in the service of the Salusian Crown, I would imagine. As for her longevity, that's really an open question. If Shadowrun tech is canon, though, there's always Leonization. It doesn't seem like a very UF-style option, though. Too impractical, not 'deus ex machina' enough. But it's still a possibility.

Omega 2 isn't only for WDF personal. In Redneck: Wilderness, a number of CFMF officers also get the Detian treatment. This is backed up by part of Twilight Part Six concerning James Joseph Condorcet XX:

So, it's very possible for everyones favorite ambassador and his bodyguard to still be around thanks to Omega-2.

Correct. From about 2100 or so on, Omega-2 was available only to winners of the Order of the Eternal Knight, the highest possible award in the UF univverse. The award is given to extreme courage and sacrifice in warriors, extreme accomplishments in scientists and peacemakers, in general to the select few whom the awarding body feel out to stick around a while longer.

Well, it *is* possible. 'Cause, you know, none of the folks in charge would ever bend or break a rule and give O-2 to someone for reasons of their own...

And no one would even steal any or anything...

I am *NOT* saying that this is the case for him, just that there *are* people with O-2 after 2100 who didn't 'go through proper channels'. Don't know that we've actually written any into things though.

QP honorable mention? Why do you rank it ahead of most of the others?

If I had the time, the other projects cleared away, and the testicular fortitude, I'd rewrite QP into a form that covers all the loose ends and follows through on so much character development. It'd be probably double its current size, and as it is only Wilderness and Twilight exceed it in length.

My current favorite of the existing UF material (released) is 'Rite of Passage.'

What? Pick just one?

For humor, I'd point at Type Mismatch Error.

Core 1 is good, but the writing is - dated. The writing style is less polished than the rest of the Core stories. And if I read the Core in one dose, I always tear up when I read "SDF-23 WANDERING CHILD." So for drama, I'll have to point at the Core as a set. (It doesn't work if I stop for food in the middle.)

But I'm still wondering if Mr. Mui has anything more to write for UF. Oh, well. I'll see it when I see it.

Favorite story, hm?

Generally, my favorite story arc is the Hammer Time series. PCHammer is just the sort of guy I'd want to have with me when running into strange wierdness.

Right up there is Leap Years, both for being well written, having an interesting story, and retro-weaving through UF continuity without having to break anything or particularly screw with things behind the scenes. (At least, as I remember it. It's been a while since I've read some of UF.)

As for stories that star the Stars, I'd go between Rite of Passage and Core 1. RoP is a snappy, exciting action ride, along with techie notes that really make me want to write GURPS:UF. C1, on the other hand, has a lot of wacky humor that you don't get as much in the later sagas.

Geeze, I dunno. Regis, can I use a Lifeline?

For me, it's Martin Rose's story "The Girl Who Knew Too Much". A real nifty adventure with a young Nene Romanova. I always get a kick when I read it.

I only discovered UF relatively recently, but here are my favorites of what I've read so far:
Core 1: It's the original, and its got wacky WPI humour. Also, it's just cool to read it, then wander over to fuller to gweep, or over to the wedge to hang out, even if the original furniture is gone, and some jerks stole all the tables . . . but I digress.
Redneck: Quagmire: It's long enough to really get into, and the beginning is just something cool that could happen to anyone, well, if SW tech is floating around anyway.
Stolen Time: A heavy, depressing, but brilliant story, and I never had the pleasure of meeting the late Derek Bacon. I can't imagine how it must effect those of you who knew him. Scary to think about what it would feel like to lose one of the friends I've made here at WPI. After the other stuff in core and GA, it can be a downer, but a story that definately needed to be told.

It's a hard choice, as I tend to like all of them more-or-less at various times. Overall, though, I'd have to pick the Twilight Arc.

Heh.

Actually, once the real-life Android had come up with the idea for the hyperdimensional Pez dispenser, it was a real short trip from there to the idea of applying it to magazine-fed weapons.

Now, if I can just come up with a perpetual feed system for revolvers... :)

Why not specialized replicator technology? After all, while practically unlikely, it would be theoretically possible to run out of ammo using the hyperdimensional ammo dispenser system, where as a replication system would have ammo as long as it had juice.

Thing is, replicators still need a source of raw materials. This wasn't demonstrated in any capacity until Voyager, but the replicators use a raw material which it then replicates on some leval (molecular? atomic?) into the required template. So you'd still be able to theoretically run out of ammo.

(And no, they don't directly convert energy to matter. That would take enough energy to power a sun for a significant amount of time... even the Trek people had trouble bending the laws of physics *that* much.)

I can think of two reasons why -not.-

(1) In-universe reason: energy costs. It takes a SPL of energy to integrate even a gram of true matter (or antimatter). Pocketspace lateral-dimension transfer is a much, much less power-consumptive device.

(2) Authorial reason: replicators are bad, bad, BAD plot holes waiting to happen. I for one don't want to repeat the mistakes NextGen/DS9/Voyager made by overplaying transporter technology.

To which, let us add, that ID storage is a known trick for them, given their exposure to people like Washuu... Replicators would not. Not to mention that anything with enough umph to power a rep would be enough umph to power a weapon without it.

The HD mags, on the other hand, while they use power, it doesn't need to be at the gun end... the HD fold between the hoppers and the magazines is initiated and powered at the hopper side.

Which reminds me... Wouldn't a sort of gattling system work for a revovler?

Good point. What I had sort of envisioned was modifying the cylender to drop one round and scoop up another as it rotated through the bottom of the arc. Unless you sealed the whole thing, though, you'd have a definate gas leakage problem.

Gryphon as The Shadow vs. some real lunatic as The Spider, Master of Men.

That's a fight for the ages. Might fit into the Exile as a fight between Gryphon and The Butcher, with Gryph not knowing it was the Butcher....

I dunno.... I'd have to say that my Fav series in the UF continuity are Hammers "Thunder Force" Arc from Exile, with the core arc running a close second. There is just something about PC's quirky humor that just sits well with me.

Which reminds me... will we ever see more works from the Exile time frame? I wouldn't mind reading a bit more about gryphon's time as Batman...
