Here's another little gem I've run across in the course of my recent and ongoing discovery of the Yogscast. Herlod Thunderfall, the dwarven Valkyrie demolitions expert, claims that this is the national anthem of Undermountain, the dwarvish kingdom in northern Alfheim whence she hails. She... might not be telling the truth about that. On the other hand, she might. It's hard to tell with dwarves.

Fair warning: The chorus of this song will get stuck in your head.

I had a feeling that would be it. It's a very... dwarf song.

>It's a very... dwarf song.

Herlod claims to dislike it, on the grounds that it's both gender-biased and perpetuates racist stereotypes against dwarves. On the other hand, no one who knows her can have missed that she's quite fond of digging holes. Occasionally quite large ones.

I'm not a dwarf but I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I'm not a dwarf but I loves me some hole
if you know what I mean
and I think you do

....it's still firmly jammed into my brain
Deep into my brain
Deep into my brain
I think it may just drive me quite insane
Drive me quite insane
Drive me quite insane

Yeah, I thought it'd be this one. This song is on my phone and gets far too much playtime, especially when driving.

Oh hey, I never actually posted the lyrics to this. Let me correct that.

Brothers of the mine, rejoice!
Swing, swing, swing with me
Raise your pick and raise your voice!
Sing, sing, sing with me
Down and down into the deep
Who knows what we'll find beneath?
Diamonds, rubies, gold and more
Hidden in the mountain store

Born underground
Suckled from a teat of stone
Raised in the dark
The safety of our mountain home
Skin made of iron, steel in our bones
To dig and dig makes us free
Come on, brothers, sing with me:

I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole

The sunlight will not reach this low
Dig deep in the mine
Never saw the blue moon glow
Dwarves won't fly so high
Fill a glass and down some mead
Stuff your bellies at the feast
Stumble home and fall asleep
Dreaming in our mountain keep

Born underground
Grown inside a rocky womb
The earth is our cradle
The mountain shall become our tomb
Face us on the battlefield, you will meet your doom
We do not fear what lies beneath
We can never dig too deep

I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole

Born underground
Suckled from a teat of stone
Raised in the dark
The safety of our mountain home
Skin made of iron, steel in our bones
To dig and dig makes us free
Come on, brothers, sing with me:

I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole

So... evidently dwarven metal is a thing, and (one of?) the band(s?) practicing it has covered "Diggy Diggy Hole".

....they're depicting blacksmithing that is even mostly legitimate-looking!

Like, the hand hammering is a bit overdramatic (you'll give yourself RSI on top of wearing yourself the hell out if you hammer like that) but they're using a pretty damn legit power hammer in there AND using it as part of the rhythm section!

This is -awesomesauce-

Oh my — this was a thing of beauty.

OK, hands up if you were reminded of that scene in the intro to the first Hobbit movie; you know, the bit in the mines under Erebor, with the dwarf smith holding a red-hot metal ingot over his head... he steps on a pedal beside the anvil... and two huge hammers come down from above and WHAP!!! squishes it (the ingot, not the dwarf) into the right shape.

It's odd, I don't usually go for metal because it's TOO LOUD and I can't make out the words... or the melody line... sometimes not the bass line either. But this, I really enjoyed. Once I'd stopped laughing.
