#0, not really a studio quote
Posted by Gryphon on Jan-12-16 at 09:29 PM
For the last little while I've been unable to shake off the habit of taking various badass movie lines and envisioning them as delivered by Inazuma. This produces many very amusing mental images (for instance, "You forgot your fortune cookie; it says you're shit outta luck nanodesu"), but I think I may just have run across the one that is destined to be my enduring favorite:

INAZUMA
(quietly)
One: Don't you ever touch me again. Two: Don't you ever touch me again nanodesu. Now. You have no idea who the hell I am or where I've come from, and I am not about to tell you my whole life story. All I need to be to you and everybody else in this naval base is a fixed. point nanodesu. The last destroyer afloat. I do not need your sympathy or your admiration nanodesu. All I need are your compliance and your fighting skills. And if I can't get those, then you can go back to the breaker's yard I found you rusting in nanodesu. Do I make myself clear?

ŌI nods reluctantly. INAZUMA makes a sarcastic I-can't-hear-you gesture.

ŌI
(grudgingly)
... yes, ma'am.

INAZUMA
Good.

She turns and walks off into the elevator.

Does anyone else get the impression Inazuma has been taking How To Be Inazuma lessons from Captain Sarah Inazuma...?

(They're on the same planet now, that's enough of a narrativium concentration to guarantee that they meet and Hilarity Ensues. Probably including many loud explosions.)

Adapting and reattributing that speech just never gets old for me. :)

(My most RTd tweet of all time was, "If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, you have a very particular set of skills," which got RTd by William Gibson. :)

EXT. NIGHT. A group of KANMUSU stand at the New Yokosuka quayside, looking off toward the sea. They look bemused, but not concerned. Off near the horizon, there are a lot of things exploding and/or on fire, but it's too dark to tell anything more than that.

"It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly sunk. There's a big difference between mostly sunk and completely sunk. Now, mostly sunk is slightly afloat. Now, completely sunk, well, with completely sunk, there's usually only one thing that you can do."

"What's that?"

"Call in the salvage divers and look for loose ordnance."

"To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your propellors below the waterline nanodesu. Then your gun mounts. Next your catapults nanodesu. The next thing you will lose will be your radar followed by your sonar nanodesu-"

"And then my radio, I understand let's get on with it."

"WRONG nanodesu. Your radio you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every destroyer will be yours to cherish nanodesu. Every frigate that weeps at your approach, every cruiser who cries out, 'Dear God, what is that thing?' will echo in your perfect radio nanodesu. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever nanodesu."

A Big Fire operative played by Alan Rickman stares in moderate apprehension at the office chair in the elevator, and the words scrawled across the hull of the defunct Abyssal duct-taped to it: "Now I have a sixteen-incher. Nanodesu."

seen in chat today; relevant, I thought.

Funny how it never occurred to me, but that's completely accurate. I'm fairly sure I say it every now and then, and where I live isn't even one of the bits of the UK where I know it is common.

Life's weird like that, innit? ;)

More evidence for my contention that Anime should be dubbed into British English, not American.

(The first reason was that Kansai-ben can't be meaningfully translated as any American accent -- the usual go-to's, Brooklyn and Southern, are both wrong -- whereas translating it as something like Liverpool when you're dubbing Tokyo as London would be pretty accurate.)
