It was basically a way to steal money from Maine.

O_o couldn't they have gone about it in a more subtle fashion, like showing up at the state treasury with bandit masks and a giant cloth sack marked "SWAG"?

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

I hate to just pick something out of the middle of an article like this, but that man (Dick Woodbury) has the most unfortunate name I have ever heard.

My middle school Language Arts teacher was called Dick Woodcock.

Think about the chain of decisions involved there. I mean his decisions, not his parents'. What would motivate a man named Richard Woodcock to a) let people call him Dick and, on top of that, b) teach seventh-grade English? Is there a worse job in the world for a man called Dick Woodcock than teaching any subject to seventh-graders? (Admittedly, it could be argued that, well, is there a worse job in the world for anyone called anything than teaching any subject to seventh-graders?) It boggles the mind.

Having served a brief stint as teacher's aide to a seventh grade teacher, I wholeheartedly agree with that. As for the decisions... well, maybe he got a kick out of it, but somehow I doubt it. Missed opportunity for a film career, though...

I'm reminded of something Teresa Nielsen Hayden said about candle salad once: "You have to have a really clean mind to come up with that."

There is a urologist in Austin, Texas, that is named Dr. Richard Chopp. The only reason that one doesn't take the prize is that he banks on his name, unlike the lamented Mr. Woodcock. (He's apparently one of the go-to guys for vasectomies.)

When I lived in a trailer park many moons ago the park manager was named Donald Duckworth. In that case you just had to wonder what his parents were thinking, or not thinking...

Donald Duck is an outstanding citizen (he wins elections all the time in Europe) and a world traveler (even more so than Tintin). A fine role model.

>My middle school Language Arts teacher was called Dick Woodcock.

I don't understand why people still use the name Dick, when there are so many other good nicknames for Richard: Rich, Rick, Ringo, Char, etc. And yet there are still powerful people like Dick Armey, Dick Cheney, Dick Nixon... you know what, never mind, I think I answered my own question.

> It was basically a way to steal money from Maine.

After watching Twin Peaks, I never would have imagined corrupt business dealings around a wood-product mill in a small northern-state town. >.>

Tintin did, however, make it to the Clow Kingdom, and that's gotta count for something
