#0, The New, Improved(?) Gun of the Week
Posted by Gryphon on Apr-26-17 at 00:10 AM
Some of you may have noticed the new button over on the lefthand side; I've got the new flat by-hand blog form of Gun of the Week into a state I think is presentable enough to call it at least beta.

Note that only a couple of the early entries have been ported over to the new format so far, so most of the links on the list page don't work yet. That is a Known Issue that will be resolved over time as I plod through dressing up the old entries and putting them into the archives. If you find anything else that's busted (and you probably will), please let me know; also what you think of the new presentation. It's pretty basic so far, but I may dress it up in the future as I get more experienced with the tools.

A thought or suggestion might be that...well, since most of the links lead no-where, perhaps mark them, and then remove the mark as they change INTO leading somewhere? Just a thought.

Alternatively, you could have old entries linked to the forum threads until flat-file conversion, though that may be more work than the user-experience enhancement is worth.

With any luck, they won't be out of service long enough for that amount of work to be worth it. (I know, famous last words...)

Fine reference there.
(Best of luck to you. :) )

EDIT: This is absurdly picky, I know, but I swear it's meant to help - the outline around the new button isn't as dark/wide/bold as the others.

So many years after someone else made all the other ones with different tools, you're lucky I even found the right font. :)

I putz'd around for a bit, and think this is a pretty good match for the existing ones ;)

Enjoy, and thanks for all your efforts - I know I've gotten quite a lot of entertainment from EPU over the years!

Yeah, that looks pretty good. Thanks.

I'm sure I'd have gotten around to it sooner or later, but it's all good. ;)

Your suggestion did make me think of something I should do, though, which is include a link to the original discussion thread in each entry. If you check the older ones that are live (001 through 003 and 039, at the moment), you'll see it in the date stamp at the top of the post. Future entries will get a discussion thread when they drop, to be linked in the same place.

Something I was wondering about was, what's that background image? I mean, I can see what it is, but I can't see what it is, as it were.

It's page 2 of United States Patent №1,892,141, Semiautomatic Rifle, granted on December 27, 1932 to John C. Garand of Springfield, Massachusetts.

#9, UPDATE: 1/4 converted

Just wanted to note that up to entry #10 (inclusive) are now converted and live (if that is the right term for a flat file blog entry). I'm trying to do at least two per day until I've got them all switched over. The most time-consuming part is actually re-linking all the photos, as in the new format they're in a different directory tree and I'm trying to do informative ALT tags for all of them.

Or I could go mildly berserk and spend all weekend getting everything converted. And in the process discover I skipped one by accident compiling the original list, leaving a bunch of items out of order and generally tripping myself up.

Sigh.

Anyway, I think I've got that sorted. Might've gotten a few bits of markup and/or linking wrong here and there, but I think all the pics are moved over, at least.

An amendment to what I said earlier. The picture alt tags were the most time-consuming part, but it wasn't hard; the part that was actually tricky was folding things that came up in a few of the discussions into the original posts. (Sometimes I didn't bother and just inlined them as addenda, but a few lent themselves particularly well to be streamlined into the main narrative.)

Overall, reasonably pleased with this whole effort.

It's very slick!

*cough*

But, uh, only a couple of entries have working 'back' and 'next' links at the top; mostly they just say http://www.eyrie.net/Grill/GotW/Entries/xxx.html

See, I told you I'd probably miss something. I forgot all about editing that bit of the header. (There's probably some way of automating that first > prev > next thing, but I didn't want to mess around trying to find and implement that. Which is why there's no "Last" link, since I'd have to go and edit every post in the chain every time there was a new one if I did that bit manually.)

Thanks, I'll fix that up sometime in the next couple of days.

There's always the classic "Prev, Top, Next" instead of newer "First, Prev, Next, Last".

I think the usual 'trick' for that is to point at something that redirects to the most recent, that way you only have to change the redirect when you post something new.
