Clearly, what's in order to get everyone fired up around here is a tiiiiny picture of Korra wearing the least physically flattering article of clothing she's ever likely to wear, unless they decide to show her doing a spot of hardhat diving sometime in Book 4.

And it just so happens I've got one handy!

There you go!

Yes, but is she standing on Yue cheering the success of the mission, or is this a test run on the ground, and she's shaking her fist at Asami who ran off with the wrench needed to disassemble the suit?

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

I could tell you at this point that Asami has a standing policy of never making it harder for Korra to get her clothes off, but I would get such a smack up the back of the head if I did, so I won't.

More seriously, how about a few numbers to think about? Here is tonight's production milestone report:

Chapters draft-complete: 16 of 20*
Draft file size: 608 KB**
Pages: 168
Word count: 80,058

Technical illustrations complete: 5
Total technical illustrations planned or in progress: 9
Character illustrations complete: 1
Total character illustrations planned or in progress: Undecided
Cover designs: 6 of 6

* Final chapter count still subject to change. Does not include front matter (Author's note, foreword, prologue) or back matter (afterword, acknowledgements), of which the former is all done and the latter about 2/3 complete.
** Note that this is a Microsoft Word 97-2003 .doc file, so a lot of that - I estimate about 1/3 - is word processor overhead, not the actual content.

Yow! That came together fast. It's been, what, 3 weeks? (first post on the forum seems to be July 6th, dunno how long it was cooking before that).

Only 1/3? Granted, this might be the conversion factor, but just I watched a 135kb .odt file turn into a 1.8mb .doc file.

Oh, we were some way along before we felt confident enough to start promoting. Still, it has been coming together pretty quickly in the last month-plus; we've been mostly head-down on CTCS since An Avatar in New Avalon dropped - which is why you haven't seen S5DS05 or The Great Ziggurat Zeppelin Raid, and probably won't for a while longer, despite the fact that both are also fairly well along.

If I had to guess, and I do, that guess would be that one or both of those will still come out before CTCS, simply because there's so much less (for which read: essentially no) post-production to be done on either one, whereas CTCS is going to require a ton (plus the art may not all be finished before the text is). That is, however, only 2 AM speculation under the influence of my MS medication's Flu-Like Side Effects, so don't hold me to it too rigidly.

How much overhead Word adds depends a lot on how much formatting there is, but the inflation factor involved with the CTCS draft is nowhere near that big. The last time I explicitly checked it, I saved to plain text at around 500K .doc size and ended up with a 300K .txt file, so it was around 40% at the time. It would really balloon if I were embedding the illustrations in the draft file, but we're going to do that in post, so the file size is still a reasonable thumbnail representation.

I'm more used to dealing in file sizes than word counts - all those years working exclusively in plain text, with text editors that don't volunteer the latter information unprovoked - but I'm given to understand that the lower bound for consideration as a "novel" in e.g. the Hugo awards* is 40,000 words, so CTCS is a respectable length, and there's still a considerable way to go. When complete, it'll almost certainly be the longest single document in EPU history (unseating Neon Exodus Evangelion: Apotheosis Now).

I wouldn't normally big that up ahead of time - it's not my habit to give progress reports - but this is such an unusual project in so many other respects, I figured what the hell. Might as well talk about the process a little.

* Not that I am claiming eligibility for the Hugo in any but a purely quantitative way. :)

I like to think that if the Hugos' governing organization felt they could get away with acknowledging unauthorized derivative works, you would've already received one or more.

Just out of curiosity, I just rechecked with the current draft. The overhead-to-content ratio seems to be holding between 1/3 and 2/5 - the present 609K .doc file becomes 373K as Unicode UTF-8 plain text (which preserves the non-ASCII characters in, e.g., "Dìqiú"):

609 - 373 = 236 / 609 ≈ 0.3875 * 100 = 38.75%

(For the technically curious, I'm using Word 2010 for Windows in "compatibility mode", which means it's saving as a Word 97-2003 .doc instead of the current .docx format. This is mainly for portability purposes in post-production.)

For comparison purposes, the longest Symphony movement, S4M7 The Revolution Will Be Televised, is 360K of plain text, and the longest single EPU piece to date, Apotheosis Now, clocks in at 527K.

Uh, that kind of implies there's going to be a Book 4. I mean, I know they're working on it, but the show's had kind of abysmal ratings and NickToons pulled, like, the last four episodes. They could be going digital, I don't know, but I'm still worried. Korra deserves a proper ending, dammit. Not the legend thereof, just her. I mean, I doubt we're going to see her and Asami ride off into the sunset on a unicorn, but other endings are acceptable.

Cancellation? Not so much.

The official word according to Bryan and Mike from the SDCC panel today (fri 25th) is that Nick saw how the online numbers totally swamped the TV broadcast watching numbers, and decided to go to full digital for the rest of Book 3 (simul. release on the nick site, Amazon, Hulu, a few others), and I would assume Book 4 as well.

Any further discussion on Nickelodeon scheduling practices should be done in Source Material or Miscellaneous.

Let's take this down the hall. CTCS is happening either way.
