("Destroyer Division 6, that's a cute name for a band...")

which reminds me, semi-apropos, that during a conversation on the work random channel yesterday, possibly the finest trademark-infringing name for an electronic or techno band emerged:

Weaponized Roomba

bzarcher
Stabby Rides Again.

(I kinda love that the 'humans would obviously be the intergalactic crazy rednecks' thing evolved into stories of space roombas with knives strapped to them because why not?)

gryphon
someone in the crew got a Roomba for Christmas, and was dubious about the note on the box that they can be hacked to add new functionalities

most assumed that was some kind of Rule 34 thing, but I contend that it means they can be made into a home version of that time the LAPD blew the guy up with their Hazbot rather than continue a standoff.

(because LAPD.)

It's like something from a remake of Home Alone where the kid, unfortunately for the crooks, is a serial killer. Explosive Roomba prowling the living room.

bzarcher
:)

"I hacked Skippy to give him a larger vacuum bag and longer battery life. And a gun!"

gryphon
"Still working on the IFF, though, so stay out of the dining room at night until I get that nailed down."
- Jen Rossum, age 8

now the above images have collided to form the picture of some clowns trying to rob the Naval Base when everyone's out on an expedition or up at Fleet HQ for meetings, and the only ship around is Inazuma.

because it's always the quiet ones who use mines.

(as opposed to the kid version of Nagato who appears in a few fan arts, who would instead lurk in corners with a baseball bat an anchor, because she still has the Big 7 horsepower in the destroyer-class body.)

bzarcher
"Whatcha gonna do little girl?"

"Well. First I'm going to hit you with this."

Dallas, actually: story here.

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if the LAPD did it too, but Dallas cops seem to have thought of it first.

Ah. I must have misremembered it as LA because of the LAPD's customarily... distinctive approach to due process.

To be fair, the guy had already killed about a half dozen cops and wounded nine others from his perch and was screaming about how he had a bomb and how he was gonna kill everybody.

There were concerns that if he were allowed to continue things were only going to get worse.

It was a bad night.

True. Still, using a safety device as an offensive weapon seems... ethically perilous. But this is probably not the place for that argument to play out.

Stabby the Space Roomba is one of the best pieces of collective storytelling that tumblr has ever produced. Right up there with "what if the humans were actually the deadly race of killers from the Death World, the unstoppable killing machines who breath a gas the other races regard as an explosive poison only good for etching metal with and who have a specific part of their brain dedicated to drugging them up when they get hurt in a fight so they don't go into shock? What if WE'RE the Krogan?"

Ah, yes, the Jenkinsverse. I never did finish reading all of it, but it has some wonderful moments -- like the part where the Galaxy's current bogeymen decide to attack Earth, and when it's over with they don't even have asses left to get handed to them. (They made the mistake of picking a pro hockey game as the site of their initial assault, IIRC.)

"Sounds like the Greys," said Alenko.
"Abducting whole colonies?" said Shepard skeptically. "C'mon,
Kaidan. The Greys had a hard time with the logistics of bagging
everybody at a minor-league baseball game. AND it was Free Bat Night."
She smirked nostalgically. "They're never gonna make that mistake
again."

'Run them to death.' is a predation strategy that does not pop up very often in biology either.

We are still engaged in an epic bromance for the ages with the first other species we ran across that did that.

Admittedly, the initial point of bonding was not so much that shared strategy as dogs' secondary strategy, "Hey. Hey buddy. Are you gonna eat all that?"

And I believe it's significant that a lot of our fictional boogeymen are things that are even better at implacably pursuing/outwalking prey than we are (the weak, civilized modern breed, at least). Something that can beat us at our own game.

If you haven't seen it, check out "Nature, you scary" (http://imgur.com/gallery/RNsle). It starts off with this, and gets better:

I really want a science fiction story where aliens come to invade earth and effortlessly wipe out humanity, only to be fought off by the wildlife.

They were expecting military resistance. They weren't counting on bears.

Oh, I'm very familiar with The War of the Worlds, IIRC that was one of the first movies I ever saw and I've since taken in most of the various versions I've come across. But the people who did this set of responses put a lot of creativity into it too :)

And why have they filled their tanks with high-octane gasoline when they're destroyers and can have no earthly use for such a thing? It all leaves so much unexplained.

In the meantime, here are three submarines performing a swimming-themed dance number. Please try to overlook the fact that one of them is an infamous war criminal. It wasn't really her fault, a ship can't control what her crew gets up to.

Because they are from Kancolle and someone looks at generic fuel barrels and thinks "gas"? Instead of no less generic bunkerage.

Yeah, you're probably right. The really funny thing is that those drums the destroyers are carrying in the expeditions don't even represent fuel. They're based on an attempt the IJN made at resupplying the troops on Guadalcanal by floating chains of drums packed with food and ammo to shore from passing destroyer flotillas. (It didn't really work. The drums kept sinking, or getting lost, or being intercepted by the US Navy, or being bombed and strafed by American planes. By the end of the campaign, the surviving soldiers were too malnourished and weak from disease to even drag the damn things ashore. Not for nothing is Guadalcanal still known in Japan as "Starvation Island".)

Upon reflection, this is basically what would happen if Ro-chan read a book about the WDF culturing up the Zentraedi, then enlisted Shioi and Hachi to help her try a similar thing via the Joint Tactical Network on Conditioned Unit Kongō. The background, in particular, gives it that "happening just off to the left of the JTN tea gazebo" vibe.

Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Admiral, and nice hot tea.

Kongou's devotion to the Admiral, some suspect, comes from the bit of trivia that she sank with an Admiral on board.

Of course, it could also be the British obsession with Admirals (or at least Nelson) too. Kongou was MADE in Britian only a few dozen feet from where Admiral Togo's Mikasa was built. (And Togo himself maintained that he was Horatio Nelson, reincarnated.)
