You were expecting something in .45, but it is I, a .40-caliber Steyr!

I know no more about guns than just watching Gun Jesus can teach me, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that I like me some raygun pistol profiles, given that this, the Beretta Neos, and the Walther CCP are about tied for me for 'best looking pistol to appear in Gun of the Week'.

"This a 40, shorty!" - Pam Poovey (though she meant malt liquor).

The Steyr just has beautiful lines. It looks like something Shirow Masamune would design. The idea of it as the most common pistol out there, rather than Glock, tickles me.

I've shot both the Steyr M-A1 in its most recent iteration and the comparable Walther PPQ, and I'm pleased to say that the Steyr's stock trigger is almost as good as the PPQ's, and considerably better than Glock's. It's almost a toss-up as to which I like better, because I really do prefer the Steyr sights. There's something to the idea that they are easier to acquire.

Related: Steyr is suing Sig for patent infringement on the removable serialized chassis system used in the P320 (aka M17, the new service pistol - and the half-billion-dollar contract is probably why).

So I scribbled this bit of doggerel on my phone at the pub last night. This is what happens when I get goofy.

I am no liar, nor a denier
My need for a Steyr
has become quite dire
If I had one to fire
Out here in the mire
It would grant my desire
To make the birds gyre
I'd never tire
I'd sing like a choir!
