TLDR: the Homecoming servers now have an official licensing agreement with NCSoft to run the game without major modifications (still free, still funded by monthly voluntary donations, won’t delete characters or progress, will continue adding new stuff).

Really didn't see that coming but I'm pretty damn happy that it did. Been spending a fair bit of time recreating old edgelord 2000s heroes/villains from my shady past and just generally having a good time. Might even spend enough time to get a character to 30 this time around.
