No, but you have now caused me to envision the universe where Carroll Shelby played Cobra Commander, so thanks for that.

Oh dear god just imagine the -merch- that would result from that - a Saturday Morning Cartoon dedicated to powerful, fast cars on the part of the villains. It'd be like Knight Rider on crack.

On a point of order, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was a weekday-afternoons cartoon. :)

Bummer.

It was a Hasbro/Sunbow cartoon, same as Transformers, so they were on back-to-back starting at four in the afternoon, if I remember right. Or actually three, I guess, because in my cable market they were on WGN out of Chicago, so everything was an hour later for me. I remember I used to get really annoyed when baseball season started, because I would hurry home from school (which got out at 3:15) and instead of my cartoons there'd be a dang Cubs game half the time. Wrigley Field didn't have lights back then, so they never played night games at home. :)

Yeah, there's a lot of culture I've only been able to acquire a passing familiarity with secondhand. I'm trying to catch up.

Apropos to that, the Netflix She-Ra is really quite good!

Huh, TIL. And yeah, I'm glad we no longer have to abide by the whims of some TV station program manager for stuff like that. Or "there's 50 channels and the president's on all of them" type situations.

Back on topic, tho, what -was- the original manufacturer? I'm not trusting my memory just now, and there seems to be at least one brand -called- Cobra firearms but their logo has no globe involved

To be fair, at that time WGN and the Cubs both belonged to the same media company (the Chicago Tribune; "WGN" stands for "World's Greatest Newspaper"), so it wasn't just a random decision by WGN's equivalent of Andy Travis. :)

>Back on topic, tho, what -was- the original manufacturer?

As Eric noted, the company was (and still is, in a much-reorganized form) called Cobray. The animal in the logo is supposed to be a combination cobra and manta ray, a bit of cryptozoology the origins of which I cannot explain.

Is this why Ana is Baroness de Cobray in Warrior's Legacy?

I might've had that in the back of my mind, but mainly it was about sounding very vaguely more plausible than being "Baroness Cobra".

They're clearly originally from Dìqiú.

Which is doubly odd, since they don't have guns there.

Hrm. But they do have metallurgists who are good enough to isolate platinum, and machinists capable of mecha - so perhaps one of said machinists or metallurgists crossed over during that time period to the big universe and decided to put their skills towards this?

There is a small, but thriving, boutique gunsmithing tradition on Zipang (antique styling, modern build quality) so it’s not implausible that a Diqiu immigrant would get into the trade out of curiosity.

I love the idea that in the UF universe, Cobray firearms are high-quality, hand-crafted art object firearms, because the real-life ones were... uh... not that. :)

I was a kid living in Chicago during that time (though we moved to Columbus, OH shortly after G.I.Joe started) and I also remember the crushing disappointment of 'No Cartoons, Cubs Game'. Being from Chicago, though, I decided to embrace the team, and have been a lifelong fan. Child me is completely with you, though.
