"teaser/frag: GG Book 2 Act VII"

In the lazy time after dinner, with everyone lounging around the living room, Remilia sat jotting in a notebook with a pencil, a thoughtful frown on her face. Presently she looked up and said,

"Meiling, what would you say your function is around here?"

Meiling, who was in her customary spot in front of Sakuya's place at the other end of the Ottomane, craned her neck to look up and back at the mistress of the house, her expression quizzical.

"Sorry?"

"When I go to Paris," Remilia explained, "I expect I shall have to make an accounting of my household for the government—explain to them who lives here and what roles they play. Obviously I'm the head of the household, Benjamin is my fiancé, Flandre needs no particular title, and Sakuya is... well, Sakuya is many things, but for bureaucratic purposes I've chosen to call her the housekeeper. But you, I don't know... I think 'housekeeper's snuggle bunny' lacks gravitas."

Sakuya unsuccessfully suppressed a bark of laughter; on the other sofa across from her, Lena didn't bother trying, while Flandre giggled and Gryphon more decorously snickered.

"I know!" said Remilia, brightening, before Meiling could get over being flummoxed and attempt a reply. Applying her pencil, the vampire went on, "I'll put you down as my huscarl. People around here used to have those, long ago, and I like the sound of it."

Sakuya eyed her narrowly. "I'd say you're enjoying this entirely too much," she said dryly, then went on with a warm smile, "but I enjoy seeing you enjoy yourself too much."

"The heck's a huscarl?" Meiling wondered.

"Medieval chief of security, more or less," Gryphon said.

"Oh." Meiling considered that, then nodded, smiling. "Could do worse."

"From the sound of it, you almost did," Lena pointed out.

"I fail to see how being my snuggle bunny is anything other than a highly honorable office," said Sakuya with exaggerated dignity.

"Fair point, well made," Lena conceded.

Is this something a government of the time would want, beyond the headcount, or just something Remilia expects based on prior, outdated knowledge? It works to set up the scene regardless, just my sometimes irrelevant curiosity acting up.

This saying has come up a decent amount recently, even just on the forums. Is this becoming a running joke, or just one of those times the human brain sees patterns because it wants to?

Probably the latter, I doubt that "why do you live there?" was a feature of mid-century French censi, but I confess something of a dearth of research on that particular matter.

Does this mean we can give Meiling a great big two-handed Daneaxe? I rather think it does. Oh, the fun and jolly japes we can have with a big muscular dragon lady wielding a huge battleaxe that's also probably on fire. What larks we shall share.

How many pieces d'you think she could render a Neuroi into with one of those? To the nearest whole million...

...did Meiling suddenly become ultra Scottish? Also, is there a translation for "YER DIVEN'T LIKE IT UP'N, DO THA!"? Can't quite parse that bit.

No, ultra Midlands. Because yer can't stop Captain Midlands.

Also, "YER DIVEN'T LIKE IT UP'N, DO THA!" may be translated as "Your fighting spirit and martial prowess is questionable even at the best of times, but as soon as you come across an opponent of real skill and power, you tremble and quiver like an affrighted country maid at her London society debut! You bring nought but shame and dishonour to your house, and I laugh at its heritage and history if all it may muster in this age is the likes of you! Pah, I say! Pah, and thrice pah!"

I hope that helped. =]

I am more educated on the topic than I was, so I'd classify it as helpful. Also that's an amazing compression ratio in that statement.

indeed. i would now like to see a scene with Scottish Meiling and Fuu Hououji, in full Funkotroni form, heckling a giant robot match... i have no idea why this would happen, or when, or why... but i imagine it would be hilarious and require a lot of footnotes for translation

Or, Meiling and Lynette Bishop could attend a football match in Britannia. Somehow I like the idea of Witch Football Hooligans. And of Lynn being like Fuu and losing her cool during an exciting match. ;)

Also, somewhat appropriate meme:

Oh, definitely. Perhaps Lynnette and Meiling take Lucchini on a trip to Wembley to see an exhibition match between Arsenal (the dominant force in English football at the time) and Lucchini's team... il Grande Torino. For them as don't know, the Torino side of the 40s was one of the greatest teams to have ever competed up until that point, with a dynamite Hungarian coach and a squad of superlative players that formed most of the Italian national team for years, and in 1946 OTL they'd be at the very height of their powers. It'd be a game to remember for sure, with the cream of English and Italian football testing their styles against each other. And Meiling is stuck in the middle with Lynnette and Francesca going absolutely berserk either side of her.

That ought to be an experience. =]

It's like that language in Return of the Jedi where "Eii. Ya'to." means "Tell your sack-of-shit boss he'll have to do better than that, chromedick, or they'll be fishing bits of him out of their soup all the fuck over to Toschii Station, 'cause this here's a motherfucking thermal detonator, yo."

I always figured that the verbal component was something along the lines of "Because this", and the rest was self-demonstrating / obvious / required no translation, but Threepio's gonna say it anyway.

   >No, ultra Midlands. Because yer can't stop Captain Midlands.

Whenever I see an English regional accent rendered phonetically like that, I always think of that one Dalziel & Pascoe novel where the author tries valiantly to render Dalziel's Yorkshire dialect, in a scene where he goes much deeper into it than he normally does at work in order to remonstrate with a neighbor about the neighbor's penchant for domestic violence. It's so incomprehensible to any outsider, he has to explain afterward to Pascoe that what he said was, "My friend, you've got to stop beating your wife. If it's a fight you want, there's no shortage of men around here who will be willing to give it to you."

Also:

"The cold steel. The Decepticons don't like it up 'em. They do not like it up 'em."

Which in turn reminds me of the bit in Hot Fuzz where Nick and Danny get a West Country interpreter for the otherwise-incomprehensible farmer with the sea mine in his shed.

Also, for those who didn't catch the reference to Britain's greatest (and most elderly) hero, allow me to introduce you to Sid Ridley. He underwent a similar process to Steve Rogers to become Captain Midlands - but unlike his American counterpart, he actually lived through the intervening decades, his ageing slowed but not halted entirely. Thus, he is now Britain's hardest pensioner, who took the bus to the headquarters of his superhero team and collects decorative spoons. And his catchphrase is:-

---
"She's old, she's lame, she's barren too, // "She's not worth feed or hay, // "But I'll give her this," - he blew smoke at me - // "She was something in her day." -- Garnet Rogers, Small Victory
