"Surprise Appearance of NXE:AN"

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but in chapter 5 of the tongue-in-cheek crossover fic "Shojo Kakumei Ukyo" (posted to r.a.a.c on Wednesday), Utena Tenjou is on an airplane looking at the choice of in-flight movies available to her -- and one of them is NXE: Apotheosis Now. It gave me a bit of a chuckle, and I thought I'd share.

Pity that hasn't made it to video yet. If we could rent a copy of it on DVD, it would speed up the writing process considerably. :)

<snicker> If it was on DVD I'd have all my holiday shopping done... Plus a complete set of NXE dolls to give my impressionable young cousins...

I was suddenly struck by an image of Gryphon, lying on his back, painting a ceiling, looking a lot like Charlton Heston, with Gendou Ikari, dressed in a mitre and robes, asking, "When will it be finished?"
"When it's ready."
"When will it be ready?"
"When it's done."
"When will it be done?"
"When it's finished."

*gets flashback to the movie "Space Balls," in which the villain discovered where the heroes were hiding by watching the "instant movie" version of Space Balls itself*

Hadn't you noticed? This is early nineties fanfiction. It's just early nineties fanfiction with just over a decade of practice.

Or a good story. Yeesh, what is it with people going for excessive crossovers? (like I can talk :)

It's not all bleck. There's a few other poeple that write decent stuff. The problem is that now anyone with a net connection and a keyboard can write up a Ranma/Pokemon/Zoids/Utena/insert-some-crap-here fusion/lemon/crossover crap and call it a story. Quantity over quality?

MD from what I've seen your Gundam fic isn't that bad, it just needs more chapters.

In other words 98% of fanfiction.net, the other 2% being those that know what they're doing.

What annoyed me about ff.net was that my own Eva-derived fic got downright charbroiled, but I'd go and read stuff that had good reviews, and it was bloody awful. No discernable plot, if you could make it past the third-grade grammar and spellchecker vomitings. (If they bothered to use a spellchecker.)

As far as I can tell about ff.net, it seems to develop these incestuous little cliques that go around praising each other without regard to the actual quality of the fics involved.

To top it off, the recent management stupidities there seem designed to drive away anyone who has a shred of integrity about his work... <sigh>

I wouldn't know -- I discovered it circa 1995, didn't really start following it intently until 1996. As far as I can tell, it's always been Sturgeon's Law, unless there's an individual or three who are both very good and very prolific. (Richard Lawson and Rob Heynie both come to mind, for two different periods.)

Sorry... I honestly didn't think of the effect that subject line would have out of context.
