"Citizenship"
|
Well, I was looking over R-type's stuff thanks to the latest surge, and noticed that the ARC's have flags on them. Now, Jon's an American, and of -course- Asuka's German... But Canadian? I'd expect her to be Japanese, if anything... I mean, it's pretty clear that both Gendo and Yui were (well, assuming Yui was -anything-), and if not that then given that she was apparently raised in the States it should be the Stars and Stripes if anything else, so.... Huh? Blessed be. -n (I think I'll shut up now.) |

Well, that's simple enough. This is an outward sign of the first real difference of opinion Rei and Jon have experienced. Rei was originally a U.S. citizen, like Jon (and, in fact, like Gendou, who is from Milwaukee - his parents were Japanese and he did spend a lot of time over there in his younger days), but she chose to take Canadian citizenship after NERV moved to Halifax, and Jon did not. --G. -><- Benjamin D. How can she be a citizen of any nation besides the Kingdom of Heaven? She doesn't have a birth certificate, does she? --rR

>How can Rei have been an American citizen? How can she be a citizen >of any nation besides the Kingdom of Heaven? She doesn't have a birth >certificate, does she? I would suspect that, as part of the cover story generated for her to make people think she was only a bit wierd, she was supplied with a birth certificate, immunization records, social security number, serial number, certificate of authorization, kindergardern diploma, and everything else a modern girl needs to function in society at a superficial level... -Z Rabid Crack Turtle 3.14159 --- Welcome to Hell. Of course, Rei could have been told she was born in American and assumed that nationality. Not sure why she'd want to be Canadian other than the authors think Canada is a cool place or she's more comfortable being a subject than a citizen... t. there is only one king... >Not sure why she'd want to be Canadian >other than the authors think Canada is a cool place or she's more >comfortable being a subject than a citizen... Basically, it's because the US is a Tool of Evil and Canada is, well, not. Jon still believes that it can be a great country once it's freed of the influences of SEELE and so forth, but Rei, having done very little in the US and under US oversight but suffer, has had enough of the place. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
