"well, that was random"

In the nearly 20 years I've had this forum, I've had to throw out a startlingly small number of users (only one or two that I can think of offhand). Many more have just drifted away, as one might expect. People's interests change, it's a natural process of attrition. Entropy always wins in the end.

On the other hand, I don't think I've ever before received a message like the PM that just dropped out of the blue into my inbox:

"done here. delete this acct. havent been an active user for years and dont feel welcome thanks in large part to you"

I'm not sure what prompted this now, after (as noted) years of inactivity, nor have I ever been entirely clear on what the beef was in the first place, but anyway. I'm not going to argue about it, request granted. So long and thanks for the random morale hit. :/

Well, that sure as hell sucks. I'm sorry to hear it.

I mean, you and I don't agree on everything, but the key is I don't let that stop me. Especially since this is simply not a political forum. Besides, you have made every effort to steer conversations away from that direction.

This is a place to discuss, celebrate, and encourage Eyrie Productions, and I should hope anyone who created an account here in the first place would be interested in that goal!

If it's not politics, though, I'm honestly not sure what it could be. What other topic here has ever been at all divisive?

Well, I've left the (ex-)user anonymous in this thread because I'm not trying to call anybody out, but based on what I can remember of the traffic years ago, ISTR the user in question took personal offense at my replies to some of their remarks about story matters. At the time, I reckoned I was replying in the spirit of engaged discussion, but my remarks were received as aggressive. I don't believe anything political was involved.

TBH, I wasn't expecting to see that user back again after the last go-round anyway, since they made it pretty clear to everyone that they felt I was bullying them, would not be dissuaded by me or anyone else, and then went silent. It's just the sudden, out-of-nowhere, years-later parting PM I'm taken aback by. It's like they ran across an old bookmark or something and couldn't contain the rage any longer. I guess time has not healed that particular wound.

I don't recall the username, but I'm pretty sure I recall that specific series of exchanges. From my memory I'd agree you handled the whole situation properly and without any bias or aggression. I'd say I'm surprised someone can just blow up years later like that, but on the 'net... not as surprising as one might hope I suppose.

I do remember asking you to nuke my account once upon a time, but there were reasons for that - chief among them distancing myself from a really bad case of The Dumb. Vastly different circumstances, and I hope I've done right by the fresh start I was allowed.

As for the other person... man, that's a long time to bear a grudge, especially on the internet. Sounds like the sort of person who reacts to 'If you don't like (thing), don't consume (thing)' with 'But it's there and adjacent to my fandoms!!!!11!eleventyone!1'

I don't know if it's any consolation, but this did prompt me to finally poke at getting my account setup (again, somehow with the same user name...?). I just sort of drifted away from posting. Have lurked and read EPU for a long time after that, following it quite happily, I just didn't login for a long while.

For my part, I do appreciate and enjoy your work, your vision of a future. EPU's been a reliable place to read some good fiction when I feel the need to for a long time and I've reread several of the older series during the last couple of crazy years. I was listening to Curse of the Big Train just last night, in fact.

Whilst I drift away and drift back again this forum, and more especially the stories, are one of the bright spots that my memory alights upon during the dark times.

I might not agree with everyone or anyone here all the time, but I definitely feel welcome.

Haven't posted anything for years myself (and when I did, it wasn't substantive at all).

Just finished re-reading all Vocaloid stories and the new one -- started reading the new one, realized that I hadn't the foggiest what was going on, re-read the first three installments, then re-read the new one all over again. Nice to enjoy good quality writing and world-building again.

Anyway, despite not adding anything of value or engaging in any debates, I still feel welcome (just refreshed my account) and am glad to find a place to -be- these days (when everything seems to be spiraling out of control).

not dead yet,

Well, I wander into here a couple times a week, look around and meander out again. I like this place because there isn't a heavy political debate going on here. Sounds like an idiot with a long memory and a short fuse these days.....
