I sent this to Sirrocco already, but thought it might help some others, so I'll post it here as well.Anime names generally refer to something about the character's past, characterization, etc. Take two prominent UF examples.
Ten 'jou Utena Hime miya Anthy
Heaven Above Calyx Princess Shrine Flower
A calyx is the part of the flower bud that protects it before it opens. Therefore, you could say that Utena is the Heavenly Calyx, the warrior that protects Anthy before she is freed from the prison and is ready to bloom.
I think Anthy's name is pretty direct. Let's look at another set of Utena examples.
Kaoru Kozue Kaoru Miki
Fragrant Branch fragrant trunk
This set represents the Kaoru twins' dual nature. As Miki is the quiet, shy, stable on, the 'trunk' of the tree, Kozue is the flashier, showier one, the one everyone looks at first simply because it's more attractive. Without one, however, the other won't survive. Kozue's name was used as a pun for the title of episode 15, 'The Landsacpe framed by Kozue'. Now let's take an example from Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon..
Tsukino Usagi
Moon 's Bunny
This refers to Sailor Moon as 'the rabbit in the moon'. According to Japanese tradition, the picture in the moon is not of a man but a rabbit. This is also a clue to her identity as Sailor Moon, which we do not know at the beginning of the series. Finally, ome more from Utena...
Sono da Kei ko
Garden Rice Field Stalk Child
This refers to Keiko being in love with Touga, and being one of Nanami's followers simply to be near him. Since Touga's name means 'winter bud', it's easy to see how Keiko's last name refers to plants.
I hope this helps you in thinking about naming your characters. The best names are those that aren't clear at first, but at the end of the story you go "OH, so THAT'S what that means.."
Good Luck
