"Just so you all know..."

I'm semi-homeless right now, having returned to Maine without my new place being ready to take me yet. I'm staying at my father's, but I don't feel comfortable enough here (or have anywhere comfortable enough to sit) to do much writing, so things are liable to be rather slow for the next little while. Of course, I say that, and I may be overcome by an inspiration so powerful that it drives me to sit hunched over on the corner of the guest-room bed working on the laptop in the heat until I can no longer feel my right leg at all where it's pinned under me - I can't discount that possibility - but I advise you not to bank on it. :) Updates as events warrant. --G. -><- Benjamin D. Silly rabbit...hand me the Silver Crystal.. Oh, sorry, wait, wrong board... You should know, kind sir, that we await your next work with patience and anticipation, no matter how long it may take. Being, obviously, quite actve fans of yours, most of us are aware of your current (and planned future) living accomodations, you notice you haven't gotten many 'when's the next one coming out' posts. It's not neccesarily that we're patient;we do, however, understand your situation, and most of us are familiar enough with the creatve process in one way or another to know what it doesn't always come out in nice, 1 chapter a week segments, or 1 work a week compositions the way we'd like. So maybe you WON'T complete another movement of Symphony right now. Maybe you should try writing a H2G2 segment. Or a non-Symphony UF piece. Or that second part of Scrapheap City Shuffle. Or a chapter of HL? Or a million other things? I know you've always said you hated people trying to get you to write original fiction; have you ever considered non-fiction? I think you have the eye for detail and the quality of prose to make it interesting. Or not write at all for a little bit? Maybe pick up a pad and draw some crude sketches? Diddle around with a musical instrument? Being as creative as you are, you shouldn't think that you have to limit yourself to one medium. I'm not a great writer myself, nor a great artist, but I write and draw as well as composing music because I think if I ONLY composed music, I think I'd go mad. But then I'll draw a few pictures, and then I'll get inspired to write a new piece of music from something I drew. Of course, the creative process is different for everyone, so that may or may not be right for you. No matter what you do, know, and I've said this before, but I'll say it a million more times, that we stand behind you Gryphon, eagerly awaiting whatever you come up with next, of course including, but not limited to, your next Symphony piece. You've got talent, you've got patience, you've got humor, and you've got a stuffed Invader Zim. How can you lose? I think >you have the eye for detail and the quality of prose to make it >interesting. Well, uh, I'm not anticipating a lot of bandwidth to write anything. I'm kind of like Nero Wolfe; I can't concentrate without a comfortable chair, and there aren't any in this house. That's an oversimplification of a complex situation, but it'll do for a summary. I might be able to alter that somewhat, but I don't really anticipate getting much of anything creative done until I'm out of Dad's house, which won't be until the Airstream is ready, which... well, that depends on the weather. That's why I made this post in Misc instead of any specific series forum. By a peculiar coincidence, I am toying with a concept for a non-fiction project, but that will also have to wait until I have a comfortable place to sit and my music collection out of white boxes to be developed in any great detail. I might wank about a bit with my Strat if I can find my patch cable - no neighbors to annoy - but I'd hardly call a press conference to discuss that. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON 07-07-02 AT 05:49 AM (EDT) >Well, uh, I'm not anticipating a lot of bandwidth to write >anything. I hope this doesn't sound wholly stupid when I ask... Was "bandwidth" used as a metaphor for concentration and inspiration, or did you mean "bandwidth" as bandwidth? If the latter -- and, yes, I realize it was most likely a metaphor -- what do you do with so much bandwidth when writing? Thanks.

At my last place, I wore headphones whenever I dragged out the Strat or my gf's Ibanez. Now, in my new place, my downstairs neighbors told me that I can blast away without worries. Good to know. Still need a patch cable by now? BTW, Gryph... If you ever find yourself down this way again, and need crashspace, I think that we can arrange it for you... so long as you don't mind a big (c. 18lb) furry Maine Coon - Norwegian Forest Cat mix... he's a sweetie though. -- pf

you notice you haven't gotten >many 'when's the next one coming out' posts. It's not neccesarily that >we're <snip>That would break rule number one that would. But joking aside we always have the discussion board to entertain ourselves in the meantime. We will still be here waiting even if the next story comes out next year or the year after, (though I think I can still speak for all when I say WE hope it won't be so long :))
