"best tank ever?"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-17 AT 06:55 PM (EDT)

I don't play World of Tanks any more—I was never very good at it, and the community (and I use the term loosely) is not conducive to having a good time if you aren't very good at it—but I still watch gameplay videos online sometimes, and in one of them I recently learned of the existence, in the game and in real life, of what I think may very well be the coolest armored fighting vehicle ever devised: the S-tank, perhaps the only vehicle ever to be more visually worthy of the "Flatpanzer" nickname than the actual Flatpanzer.* It's so weird that they had to create new game mechanics for it in order to put it in World of Tanks, in large part because it employs a gun-laying technique that appears to be derived from the Los Angeles lowrider scene.

Ah, you have to love Swedish machinery.

* not to be confused with the series of Flakpanzers.

Yeah, the S-103 is very cool and it could have been the future if we hadn't managed to make better turrets. I always get the feeling I'm looking at something from Battletech, though the influences almost certainly go the other way.

I had in mind this one, which contains a lengthy explanation of the unique game mechanics of the S-tank (which is then almost immediately falsified by what happens on screen :).

(nod) There are an awful lot of vehicles in Battletech that are inspired by or references to various real-world 20th-century vehicles—the Hetzer, the Ontos, and the Partisan AA tank come to mind. Oddly, the Striker Light Tank, despite its curious resemblance to the real-world Stryker wheeled tank-ish-thing,* can't be a reference to same; the Battletech Technical Readout 3026 dates to more than a decade before the Stryker.

   THERE IS NO S-TANK!

Sorry...but it's one of my hot-buttons. The Strv 103 is no more the S-tank and had no more been CALLED that than the M60 Patton was named/called the A-tank.

OK, OK, don't get excited, it's just an in-game nickname. World of Tanks has lots of those. I doubt the Wehrmacht called the real Jagdpanzer IV "Flatpanzer" either, nor did the Red Army refer to the SU-100Y prototype as "Box Tank". :)

Also (if Wikipedia is to be believed), it appears it was called "Alternative S" in some procurement documentation (as opposed to Alternative A, buying an American tank, or Alternative T, buying one from Germany), so there seems to be at least some fragile historical basis for the nickname. Unlike, say, "Bert the Avenger" for the FV304 self-propelled gun, which never existed in the first place and is only called that in-game because a prominent livestreamer randomly called his that. :)

(I admit to a strange fondness for most of the community nicknames in WoT; in particular all the various riffs on Waffenträger, most notably "Waffletraktor", and of course "the Death Star" for the FV215b(183). And the Conqueror Gun Carriage Orbital Laser Cannon.)

Not to be confused—confusingly—with the Tortoise, which is that tank's actual name. :)

Yeah, that's where the supposed name came. But, see, that the procurement testing had three different choices, a *S*wedish, an *A*merican and a *T*ysk(German) one doesn't mean that the tanks, any of them, were ever called S, A or T. And, as I said, it's a hot button and I do apologize.

On the other hand, the one in the video you linked is an S1, which wasn't ever really a thing(one prototype was made), so calling THAT an "S-tank" might be excusable. But the 103, not so much. Incidentally, it never had a name as such, in contrast to the Patton or Leopard. Sweden has never been much for naming gear in that manner, up until quite recently. Tanks have been the "103" or the "81" or the "122" or similar, and other vehicles have been the BV(bandvagn, "tracked vehicle")206 or SF(stridsfordon, "combat vehicle") 90. The CV90 is/was further differenced by the gun carried, such as 30/35/40/120.

It's not even simply an in-game nickname. Heck, the folks at Bovington list "S-Tank" as an alternative name.

Now, the people of Bovington are, I am sure, nice and generally knowledgable people...but when it comes to Swedish tanks? They're apparently utterly clueless.

Because it isn't, and has never been, "S-tank". As noted by Gryphon above, it was ALTERNATIVE S, for Swedish, that is to say a domestic tank in the procurement "competition". If the 103 is supposed to be the "S-tank", then the M60 Patton and Leopard 1 are "A-tank" and "T-tank", respectively, and if you try to argue THAT with anyone with any knowledge of tanks, they'll laugh at you.

Funnily enough, one thing the M60 wasn't officially called was "Patton". People call it that because it was descended from the M48 Patton, but officially it was merely, in the ineffable poetry of the Army's naming system, "105mm gun, full tracked, combat tank, M60". I guess someone decided that naming a fourth tank after George Patton would have been a bit silly. :)

(For that matter, the Leopard 1 wasn't really the first German tank to be called Leopard, despite the explicit number in its name. But I suppose it could be argued that it was, since the 1940s Leopard was canceled before it could go into production.)

Well, I have to say that, yeah, I can see a fourth tank be named "Patton" would be somewhat silly. On the other hand, compared to "105mm gun, full tracked, combat tank, M60", Patton, or even Patton IV, isn't that bad...

Who knows, in the alternative realities where Sweden did choose either the A or T alternatives, people call the Swedish modified M60 the "A-tank" or the corresponding Leopard 1 the "T-tank".

-VR
And perhaps there is an alternate MoonEyes/Stoke Mandeville arguing that just because people shouldn't call it the "A-tank" because "There i no A-Tank"
"They copied all they could follow, but they couldn't copy my mind,

Or perhaps they understand that vehicles can be known by things other than official designations.

>Because it isn't, and has never been, "S-tank".

While it is not the _official_ name for the tank it is, however, a name the tank is known by.
