I HATE it when the Muse hits, and it's 0400, and you're working along... and suddenly you realize that what you just wrote blows, because it has no real motivation or plot and it's been going on for two pages with no real resolution in sight. Obviously, I need to have men burst through the door with machine guns at this point. But that probably wouldn't work out well either. Ard Sumhenner Ronin Research, Silicon Valley, CA

>>Obviously, I need to have men burst through the door with machine guns >>at this point. But that probably wouldn't work out well either. > >Why not? It's what Paul Verhoeven always does when he finds >himself in that situation, and I expect it's made him quite wealthy. >:) > >--G. I find myself thinking of that episode of TNG where Picard went to the holodeck to try and relax, sat down behind the Dixon Hill desk, and a gunman burst through the door. So he reset it, and happened two more times, each time with more men and bigger guns, and when he asks the computer why, it says that it's what would happen in a random situation based on a Dixon Hill novel. As for Paul Verhoeven... I think it'd be a bit more fun to have flying bugs decapitate a random passerby, and then add a gratuitous shower scene. (Starship Troopers is one of the most mindless movies I've ever seen, and I refuse to see it again simply because if I do I'll hate it, while right now I've got fond memories of big explosions and lots of violence, along with some nudity, which doesn't hurt.) -- Sean -- "Imagination is more important than knowledge." -- Albert Einstein "It's not easy being green." -- Kermit the Frog |

For some reason, I thought this was a thread about Pen-pen... <note to self, obtain Eva tapes, then smack Wolff> >I HATE it when the Muse hits, and it's 0400, and you're working >along... > Working along? How much caffeine to you inget on a daily basis? 0400 is about my limit before 'working along' becomes 'imprinting key shapes on my forehead'. >and suddenly you realize that what you just wrote blows, because it >has no real motivation or plot and it's been going on for two pages >with no real resolution in sight. >Obviously, I need to have men burst through the door with machine guns >at this point. >Working along? How much caffeine to you inget on a daily basis? 0400 >is about my limit before 'working along' becomes 'imprinting key >shapes on my forehead'. When I'm actually working, I work 10pm-8am. Now that I'm off staring at my eyeball for extended periods, the nocturnal habit has stuck. >Things that make things go BOOOM. Always works out;) Actually, it was time for cultural exposition of my major alien race in a Denny's. They're really quite racist bastards, these aliens, and my Terran lead character's coworker is from a House in their Confederation that isn't looked on too favorably for a number of reasons, both sociological (they're considered a bit too shifty to trust) and otherwise (legend has it that House Morgeth's alliance with Something Nasty led to the creation of the Eliarans' traditional foes, the Batyri). This works out rather well; my Terran protagonist is very into live and let live, his Eliaran girlfriend isn't. Ard Sumhenner Ronin Research, Silicon Valley, CA

>Obviously, I need to have men burst through the door with machine guns >at this point. But that probably wouldn't work out well either. Nah. Just have someone spouting off about being old enough to take out insurance and have an entire division of MIB show up behind him. It worked in Furi Kuri. Then again, what doesn't work in Furi Kuri?
